Rules regarding ban dodging

Discussion in 'Empire Help & Support' started by SchlonkeyKong, Feb 11, 2018.

  1. Just curious, was part of a conversation on SMP1 today and it seems there's no rule against someone dodging a ban by using an alt. For example: User1 gets banned 3-4 years ago. User1 comes back today as User2 and continues to play as normal, maybe dropping hints or even questioning why User1 was banned in the first place. Perhaps even admitting to being User1 back from the depths of the ban.

Could an admin/mod/dev elaborate a little more on why this isn't a rule or what the unwritten rule regarding the aforementioned topic is?

  3. Thanks for the info. Seems like an additional headache dealing with repeat offenders or the sneaky types.

  4. Krysyy and Aikar posted here not too long ago. Without knowing the details, if they are acting like they are getting away with something they probably aren't aware that they can play again as long as they behave.

  5. I don't know the full procedures, but I would guess that once someone breaks rules badly enough they will get an IP-check prior to their ban. If that check would give a dozen other banned accounts (or even 1 or 2 other banned accounts :p), you can easily see that you have to do with a repeating offender and they can get IP-banned.

I believe in second chances myself, and I am glad that staff does too. If someone repeatingly breaks the rule, staff will notice and this person will not easily be able to play on EMC again, at least not for a long time. But if someone gets back on with a new account and they have no reason to get an IP-check on previous ban, I don't see why they should be banned again anyways since they show that they have learnt their lesson.

    EDIT: 1250th post woot!
  6. As has been said and quoted from Krysyy/Aikar so far, individual account bans don't affect alt accounts. Even if you have a known alt account, and your main account gets banned, your alt account won't be affected. The only time we do is if the ban is an IP ban, which means we ban every account associated with your IP address.

IP bans are actually pretty rare on EMC, and only used in extreme cases. Even then, an IP ban doesn't always mean that a player can't buy a new account and join EMC with it. The staff team strongly holds the belief that everyone has the ability to change for the better, and we like to give people the chance to prove it to us.

As Krysyy stated in her earlier quoted post, if somebody is willing to pay Mojang the $27 (or whatever it is) for a new Minecraft account so they can play on EMC again, we typically are willing to give them the chance to show us that they have changed. If they revert to their old ways, then we simply enact the necessary punishment again.

Despite this policy, you would be surprised how rare this sort of thing happens. It's actually pretty uncommon for players to get banned and then come back in this way. But the ones who have are very grateful for this policy, since it has given them the opportunity to rejoin EMC and be a part of the community again.
