So many of you that may not know me too well. I was raised on a farm! I have had goats, horses, buzzards (well I found one and it didn't end well lol), dogs, cats, mules, pigs, everything! But my Dad hated chickens lol. So me and my husband are renovating my old house and the farm and I get to have chickens! So I have been looking, and I have decided on one breed for sure. They are known as the Black Giants. They have feathers on their legs, that make them appear to be wearing 'britches'. I think they are adorable. They also lay 280+ eggs per year! They are larger eggs to! As hence their name they are giants! I am excited and wanted to share my news! I will be getting my chicks in the mail and they will only be 2 days old! Anyways! Just thought I would share my happiness and excitement! Peace, <3, Kindness, & now CHICKENS! Skitz
Cool! I'm looking forward to hearing your stories and seeing the pictures! And wow, hadn't expected this much talk of eating them...
Sorry for being an instigator and derailing your thread a bit. It really is cool that you are getting them. I do have something constructive to contribute. Where I live seem like one of the more populated cities in the area (still very suburban tho). But technically we are not incorporated as city. Therefore, we fall under county law. Depending on the size of your lot you can legally keep a certain number of chickens. The average home around here can have 3. I have 2 different friends that have chickens in their back yard for eggs/ pets .
My grandma and grandpa ( on my fathers side ) they live on a farm about 2 and a half hours away from me and I visit them about twice a month. Their farm is cool. They have dogs, cats, goats, chickens, ducks, and horses. They are getting pigs soon! I will describe the farm cause I can They live on a hill so when you first get there you have to drive up on a hill then they have their house there. In the house one of the rooms is for the dogs. They have Boston Terriers, Husky's, 1 tamed wolf, and Labs. The dogs go outside on leashes sometimes to do their 'business' and get fresh air! The cats live inside and outside, some of them just show up one day and stay xD Most of them are calico but there a other cats to. They mostly hang in the hay loft in the barn. So now if you go out of the house and keep going up the hill you will come across the barn which is pretty big. Inside the barn to your right is a rabbit cage with a huge fat rabbit xD to your left is a pile of hay that I usually climb with tunnels inside them where the cats sometimes sleep. But, if you keep going straight there are idk how to describe them but pens I guess. The horses go in them during the night or when it is storming. Otherwise they are let out into the enclosed field. Now if you exit the barn from the entrance you turn left and there is a chicken coop. When you step into the chicken coop there is a door you open it carefully so the chickens and ducks dont escape. Once your fully in there are little nests full of eggs and the chicken with the occasional grumpy rooster who chases you And there are a few ducks. There used to be a lot of chickens but there was a mountain lion who kept coming down and eating them along with some fox's. Once I dropped a chicken egg on one of the dogs head xD Well anyways, if you keep going farther up the hill there is a small building. Next to it is a well where we get the water for the animals. When you enter the building it is quite small but there are different pens. 2 pens are dedicated for the goats who are pregnant or have a baby to care for. The other pen is bigger and that is where all the goats go and there is a big doggy door/goat door for them to go outside into a enclosed area with trees but sometimes we let them into the huge field which is not closed off. Baby goats are cute <3 Thats all really xD Farm's are fun
I raised baby goats all the time. I enjoy and love all farm animals! Only ones I tend to eat are pigs, (that aren't pets, and cows. However, that is rare. As far as derailing my post no you didn't! Thank you all for your wonderful comments and shares! Also, I will name one foghorn even though he will be a she
