Debate/Argue Thread

  1. If you cant prove anything besides the one side that you believe, how can you claim that any sort of science that contradicts you religion is wrong?
  2. I want a shirt that says "God = Cake".
  3. Here is my "faith"
I believe that the universe is infinitely vast, and has room for a being that, to mankind's limited understanding and perception, would absolutely qualify as a god. I'm even willing to accept that, at one point in our ancient past, it decided to pay a visit to our tiny blue speck and give us some pointers on civilization.
I don't believe the mythos mankind created around this godlike entity. I find it preposterous that a being completely omniscient and all-powerful would let us go around wrecking "his" gift to us, each other, and bickering pointlessly over whose interpretation of "his word" is the right one. I find the difference between "Old Testament" god and "New Testament" god so strikingly different that they may as well have been two separate gods. One whose philosophy was "the beatings will continue until morale improves" and the other is classic 60's "Peace Love and LSD, and oh here have my only son as a sacrifice to absolve you of all your earthly sins!"
It stretches credibility just a bit.

I don't lack faith. I just don't believe in yours. And telling me "I lack faith because I need evidence" does not absolve you of the need to back up your statements with facts. That's Debate 101 core curriculum, my friend. Christianity doesn't get a special pass just because you want it to.

  4. As another Christian, I have to say that in my 2.5 readings of the Bible I have never, ever come across anything I took to mean that we will forget those who did not make it to heaven. To be honest, I feel like someone made this up. Although it is true that taking meaning from certain verses takes some interpretation, what JTC is suggesting, especially without providing a reference verse, is taking "reading in between the lines" a bit too literally. I agree with you here.
Jtc, this is not how debates work. As Christians, we operate on faith, this is true. But yelling at non-Christians that needing evidence is ridiculous and that they need faith is not going to get anywhere. By all likeliness, this thread is not going to convince anyone, just provide a nice place for a logical debate. Please try to provide some reasonable arguments, as it stands you are slightly embarrassing yourself.
  5. Hahaha, I would love that shirt, although I would prefer God = Bacon.

    Sorry for double post.

EDIT: Wait, I just thought about that for a second, and realized the joke. I feel so stupid now :p Never mind, I don't want that shirt. Well played Hylian, well played....
  6. You know he is 13 years old right. He has not even gone to college yet. Requiring him to break out a logical argument may be a bit of a tall order.

  7. To which I'd suggest he throw up a white flag for this particular debate and bow out gracefully until he has something more substantial up his sleeve. Being a teenager doesn't mean he should be let off the hook in defending his views properly - I'd daresay learning to do so now would be healthy, even.

But yeah, maybe too much to ask.
  8. You have a good point. It can be a learning moment for him.

  9. Of course the answer is simple. It's full, with water and air!
  10. Okay, maybe the android phones do have more customization options, but Apple beats Android on almost every other platform. Again, refer to the link I have previously linked.
  11. Haha you confused me when I saw you like the idea for that shirt. I get the "humor" of it for non-believers, but don't find it funny AS a Christian. lol

  12. Agreed. Bacon is just one of the many wonderful gifts God has given us as just a faint indication of His own wonderfulness. :D

  13. Yah, I don't know what I was thinking. Somehow, when I first read it and replied I thought it was just like cake is awesome, God is awesome, not sure why that was my interpretation. Only after I read it again did I get it :p Very clever though Hylian.
  14. Seeing how there's a religious debate here I think I'll pitch in.

  15. I don't even know what to say......
  16. How I see religious debates in a nutshell...
  17. What platforms are you speaking of? Plus, laptopmag is infamous for being Apple friendly when they receive a nice check from that nasty fruit.
  18. You know. This is one of the most impressive threads I've ever seen. We have probably two of the most controversial conversations going on AT THE SAME TIME (Religion vs Anti-Religion) and (My technology is superior to your technology) and we haven't had to do much (if any I don't think) moderating of it.

    Bravo community.
  19. And All I had to do, was "borrow" an idea from cddm and post. Tada, after a few pages, bam, here is our thread. Page 24, post 481. :) Thx for making this an awesome thread to read guys, its a good debate story. Now forget you ever read this and continue. :p
