Debate/Argue Thread

  1. A belief is an internal thought or memory which exists in one's mind. It doesn't have to be true, and it doesn't have to be justified. For instance, Somebody can believe that they can build a bridge using nothing but sugar, or that they were abducted by aliens at night and experimented on.

Knowledge, on the other hand, are thoughts or memories that are true and justified. For instance, through various techniques and repeated experiments, we know for a fact that the earth orbits the sun and that water is made up of one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen.
  2. Thank you!

I have a followup question: Is it possible for one to go from belief to knowledge of God? What would that process look like?

Or perhaps, in more general terms, what would it take for a belief in general to be come a knowledge.
  3. Sure, if god would stop hiding from us and demonstrate his existence. :p Such as performing miracles repeatedly in front of scientists, so that they can verify them as not being caused by any natural means.

That would be a lot more convincing than 2000 years old hearsay, with four different stories, and no reliable historical documentation to back it up.

Repeated, consistent, reliable data is really all it takes. If you have an idea, and you do an experiment 1000 times, and you get the same result every time, and then you tell others, and they too try your experiment 1000 times, and they all get the same, consistent result that you did, you can probably start calling your belief knowledge. (Though I must admit, I don't know exactly how stringent the scientist are, but I know it's generally much higher than "ordinary people" require. For instance, when they were looking for the Higgs boson, they concluded that the chance of their result being just random fluctuation was 0.00006%. That's 1 in 3.5 million...)
  4. I am speaking NOTHING but the truth. If you don't accept it, don't accept it. But i know and all the other Christians know that i am telling you the truth

  5. Prove it, without using the bible.
  6. How do you expect me to do that?
That is just like me saying to you: "Prove that God doesn't exist without using science."
Or: "Prove that the big bang theory created the earth without using science"
  7. Science is a broad term for a study of something using many pieces of evidence. Science is a whole category, while the bible is one literary work. If i were to say "Prove it, without using religion." then you could cancel out science for me. But in your case, you would have to get rid of one piece of literary work from my grasps, and then tell me to prove it.

  8. Once again dodging my question and refusing to give a valid answer by (once again) asserting a truth with no evidence. This is not the proper way to propose an argument jtc cmon! I sense you're getting a little angry, but I'm only pointing out a valid point that the Bible fails to demonstrate the perfection of heaven and you gave an answer you fabricated yourself. Just give me one Bible verse stating that you forget the memories of the damned and I will hand this argument to you and admit that you're not making things up.
And on a side note, the "All other Christians 'know' you are telling the truth" thing. What's that supposed to mean? That they believe in what you say so I should too? And I can ask another Christian what happens to memories of past friend who went to hell and they could give another answer. Not quite sure what you're trying to say here.

  9. That's the thing: The Bible is the main part of religon. The Bible is what guides us in our walk. Without the Bible we'd be lost.
So telling me to prove it without the Bible is like saying (Revised version): "Prove that the big bang theory created the earth without using Molecules or atoms.
  10. The Bible perfects Heaven. It is a perfect place where believers who are devoted to The Lord go when they leave the Earth. Please keep your comments to yourself or at least get your facts straight.
  11. I cannot give a verse relating to the damned, because you must read in between the lines for that
    to stand out to you.

Also, the reason the Bible does not explain the perfection of heaven is because it is SO awesome, SO amazing, and SO complicated we cannot even begin to fathom it!

  12. ... Your not getting it.
Please tell me why the Koran isnt true, but the bible is.
  13. No. Just no.

The problem with this argument is that it's circular logic.
"The Bible is true because it's the Word of God." <-> "We know it's the Word of God because the Bible says so."

This is not a tenable position for any kind of reasonable debate. I respect cddm95ace's position, wherein he bases his faith on the fact that the Bible does reflect certain historical accuracies. Your arguments here, however, resemble those of a kid on Christmas.
"There's a present that says it's from Santa! I didn't see him deliver it, but it says it's from him so it must be!"
Except in this case it doesn't seem likely you'll realize your parents bought it while you were at school...

Anecdotes aside, there are factual elements in the Bible - events of verifiable historical record. However, attributing these events to the Christian god is no different than say, ancient Mayan or Greek mythos wherein the movement of suns and moons is attributed to divine act. There's a vast difference between "God made it rain 40 days and 40 nights" and "Geological study shows there was a period where much of the earth was covered in water."

Bottom line, you can choose to believe something is true all you like. But if you insist that it's hard, irrefutable fact without any evidence beyond the above circular logic, don't expect anyone to take your word for it.

Unless they also still believe in Santa.

  14. I would say that there are many things in the Koran that are true. And there are some that I would say are not true. I think you would say the same about the Bible. I can say at least that the followers of Mohammad, the Jewish people and the followers of Jesus are all sons and daughters of Abraham.
  15. I have never read the Koran, so i cannot answer that.
  16. You all "need" evidence to back up what i'm saying, and that shows a lack of faith.
You shouldn't Need evidence to what i'm saying, God's word should be enough.
  17. Let me change the question then. What makes Islam, and Buddhism wrong, and Christianity right?
  18. I am also not an expert in those religons either, so i cannot answer that question either
  19. And round and round we go, ladies and gents!
How do you know it's "God's word"?
A: Because the Bible says so.

Again I'll reiterate - you cannot state as verifiable fact that it is god's word. You believe this to be true, and I will not argue your beliefs. It's when you try to pass off your personal faith as an absolute fact without evidence to support it that I'm going to call shenanigans. I'll respect your belief, but if you expect to convince anyone else, you need more than "Because God said so!" to back it up. Particularly if the person you're debating with puts no stock in your idea of god.
  20. i have one simple phrase for you:
This shows that You lack faith.
you need "proof" to back up what i'm saying, and that should not be so.
    You are lacking faith, friend.
