And yet, a greater force beckoned me: hunger pricked at my core, and my need for sustenance sneered at my heart's hesitancy. Fear could not withstand food. And so forward I marched, toward the cure for my ill. I looked up at the great being, majestic, iron arm laying the morsels on the tray. Her hard eyes did not yet pierce me; her towering hairnet remained inclined toward her station. Now I was there before her, a mere sinner before the impassive idol, begging salvation. I reached toward the slivers of barbecued chicken that lay there, so tempting, so coveted. My hand grew closer, closer; I waited with bated breath for the rebuke. "Where are your parents? You need their permission for that." It never came. I took my chicken and retreated with thanks. No more was fear, no more was my dependence on the presence of mother for food! I was free, now, free to take whatever free samples I wished! Never again would my stomach's complaints be postponed! So ends my tale. I entered that Costco a boy; I left it a man.
