Login with you details, when it says cant connect click the 'play offline' button which is under 'try again'

In theory no since all clients use Minecraft.net's login servers. However, I've heard somewhere that the play in brower option works so try that (I haven't so no guarantees).

They make a special plugin for Bukkit (Minecraft server software) which allows lots of extra features along with a client which enables those features. The online/offline icon exists out of chance really, it's not part of what they normally do.

I can confirm in browser minecraft works.

That's a shame One thing I can advise is that if you have a 64 bit computer, make sure you're using 64 bit Java. That might fix it.

As good a game as minecraft is, the login and session servers are too unreliable

To be fair, it is a holiday in Sweden today so that may be the cause of the problem. But I agree, they need better servers.
