It's a nice decoration, it gives off Light level 15, it requires diamond to get (Nether portals!) and it can be placed above chests and the chest/s will still open! Also, in my single player worlds, I connect them to sticky pistons, stand inbetween a block and the glowstone, activate a level and see all of the caves.

congrats glowstone! it feels like it was just yesterday that you where added in minecraft!

or he could just spend every second of every day trying to get diamonds, and then make them into blocks, and fill up the chests with them BUT doesnt stack them.
not that hard really. i could have almost 100 double chests of iron blocks.

Dirt is ugly

Glowsotne isn't a very common subsance, but not rare either. It can work under water, it melts ice, and it glows brighter than torches. Therefore, making it valuble.
