It really isn't that hard to build a head farm. Just a tower and a hopper at the bottom. Although I understand what you mean by it being hard to get your head, I think that it is fine. If you are worried about dying trying to go get your head, just put a bed at the top. If you don't want to do that for some reason, make your head farm along path that is lit up.
