the new launcher for minecraft is safe to use. Just make sure you have selected 1.5. And the launcher uses a new place for mods i think because it does not use the .minecraft/bin/Minecraft.jar. U can have both of the launchers installed so if you don't wanna use it... just revert back to the old one till 1.6 is out. Don't get it off of a random site that mojang doesn't use. because of dem malware and hackers.
