There are any number of reasons why this might happen. Bite's nailed one of them, but if you're using mods, it could also be a mod conflict. Additionally, I had a problem with my install where the game music would cause a crash. Removing the music folder solved it, though I felt the loss of Jeremy Soule's tunes keenly.
