If you didn't know already, walking 1m in the nether converts to 8 blocks in the overworld. This makes for a shorter ride to get somewhere far. If you are thinking about making an outpost somewhere, grab some armor, fire resistance potions, and pickaxes (if you are making a tunnel) and use this to help you calculate how far you will go!
I used this particular trick to get far out in the SMP2 wild to make my outpost. Made it 100k or so blocks out in the wild in an eighth of the time!
*saves this thread for future reference* I joined a baby smp2 outpost, only To have the owners never log in again... And I'm way out here wondering about the futility of it all.... Heh. Will likely use a nether tunnel and just establish my own, on their border.
