ackshully death in the arena was quite rare and most fights had strict rules and regulations. Keeping them trained up, fed on enough calories to support their muscle mass/bulking, and housing them was an expensive investment and no promoter would’ve participated if it was a common occurrence to waste all that money
The focus was on putting on a good show for the audience and fights were ended once someone became injured, and a lightweight would never go up against a heavyweight. Most gladiators died of sustained injuries in their mid to late 20s still, but that was because they were participating in hardcore boxing matches... they wouldn’t usually die in the ring :p
