If a certain leaked story / powerpoint is to be believed, the Brazilian government is actually *encouraging* these events; supposedly, they need to develop land within the Amazon basin to exert more control over the territory, and undermine conservationist efforts.
I don't know if I fully believe the story, but I'd bet on the latter part being true anyway.
I really believe it. Bolsonaro's election platform had a lot about removing environmental protections for the Amazon and he has a seething hatred for the indigenous peoples living inside it. On top of that he, for some inexplicable reason (🤑), adores the agricultural industry that has been eyeing up the Amazon for a while.
See also his budget cuts to the Brazilian fire services. They severely handicap their ability to respond effectively to these fires, allowing them to spiral out of control very quickly. Such needless waste that just makes me really sad.
