Pessimist checking in. The Amazon is on fire because President Bolsonaro, who was elected last year and had his campaign run by Steve Bannon (Donald Trump's ex-chief campaign strategist), wants to burn down the Amazon as a way to stick it to tHe LiBtArDs, create farmland, and displace thousands of natives to ethnically cleanse Brazil.
His Government are intentionally ordering the setting of fires to the Earth's lungs, and are gradually rolling back funding for their fire fighting services. This is a platform that was endorsed by 57 million people - 55% of the Brazilian electorate.
That honestly makes me so sad, that such a strong hatred of the Amazon was supported by 57 million people and who knows how many abroad. If Bolsonaro hadn't been stabbed and almost died during the election, I'd lose all hope that change would ever come.
