It can add up pretty quickly. Especially if you have a lot of extensions installed in Chrome. MC mods can also take up a lot of RAM

I don't have that many extentions in Chrome (only 2/3 "active"), but yeah each apart from one Minecraft eats like 2.5 GB of RAM (one only uses like 900 MB for some reason I don't unders- ah wait, one has no mods, maybe that's it?)... and I have like 30 chrome tabs open, not helping either... :P

(whoops I have 6 minecrafts open right now... but, yesterday I had "only" 5, and that made exactly 0 difference... :P)

Chrome is known for memory leaks. And some of your RAM may have died, despite your computer saying you have 16 GBs, one of your sticks still may have died. That happened to me actually.

Hmm, apart from taking all out and testing individually (because they are ridiculously hard to get to >.<), is there any way of testing if they all work? - I actually relatively recently had some problems, possibly regarding RAM (still not sure), but I believe I tested some sticks (I have 2x4 and 1x8 GB) individually, and that worked.

The only reason I knew one of them died was when I took my computer in for a totally unrelated problem (my OS on my C drive somehow corrupted) that I possessed neither the skills nor knowledge to fix. So the discovery it DID die was an accident. But it may not even be that anyway. I would either take it to someone skilled AND/OR upgrade the 4 GBs to 8 GBs if possible.

Ouch, a corrupted OS sucks... Hopefully you didn't lose much.
I've built the computer myself, so I know all the insides and outsides, so I should be dkilled enough for pretty much anything - the thing is that I can't move my computer (another one that took ages to get right lies ontop, so it's stuck far under my desk), and the CPU cooler sits pleasantly over all the RAM slots. :P

Some weeks ago something odd happened and I had to take the RAM out, and that took ages... :P
Upgrading could be an idea, there still is one more slot free... but that costs money. :P So far it's surviving, and it's actually going better than before (no minecrafts have crashed, it did do that multiple times in the past), so I think I and it will just have to deal with it. :P

Like I built my comp too, but I still didn't know one stick was fried, as Windows still said I had 16 GBs.

    That's really weird. :/
Let's assume that since task manager says 5x ±2.5 GB is used for minecraft combined with the fact that nothing has crashed yet, that I should be fine... hopefully... :P At least I'm using all that's available. ;)

Allocate less to the minecraft client. Under Launch options; JVM Options: "-Xmx1G" would tell it to allocate 1 GB of RAM.
Right now I am guessing your computer is picking how much RAM to use on each.

Try using Minecraft Console Client. Each instance only uses 10 MBs. It's only chat based but if you're just afking it's all you need.

@Wither: could do that, but is there really an indication of something being wrong?
Chicken: yeah lol that should reduce it. :P I have it set to 4GB each. :P If I reduce it to 2GB, do you think its performance would be greatly reduced? (each client uses ±2.5GB now)

@Kloned: sounds like a cool program, but unfortunately I need more interaction possibilities than just chat. Maybe when I finally get my own outpost, I can drop a few, but I'll still almost always need to craft something or walk or whatever. :P

I was just offering something you could do. I skimmed through the whole comment chain before I commented. I don't know if anything is wrong or not.

you have chrome tabs using 300MB of ram... if I may ask, when was the last time you restarted chrome, the MC clients, and/or the entire computer?

Chrome has its own task manager which you might find helpful. It's under 'More tools' in that top-right menu

I also want to point out that a computer using all of the system RAM isn't a bad thing, necessarily. Unless you actually start to notice a loss in performance, I wouldn't even worry about it, tbh. The RAM is there, so it's ok for the PC to use it :P

@Wither: thanks :) I've been meaning to do that test for a while actually, just not as easy as clicking a button, unfortunately. :P Might do is soonTM... :P
@Alex: ah, cool. It isn't that bad, according to it: http://puu.sh/zZdE7/0ac6d4608e.png

@Hallows: some of these Chrome tabs have been pinned for months... :P But, I fully turn off my computer EVERY night (excluding like 8 times per year), so that shouldn't be a problem, right? It's now been turned on for 18.5 hours, and so have those MC clients and chrome. :P

I'm actually somewhat surprised and somewhat happy it's gone this high, in the past it (= the counter in task manager) wouldn't want to go past like 14.5 GB, even though it actually used more... Performance is, uh, depends... some, especially chrome things go quite sluggish, but minecraft's performance is mostly fine.

Just shut off my computer (because sleep) and while clothing minecrafts the speed didn't increase, and when I only had Chrome left it still was slow and took like 5 seconds to close... seems like there might actually be something wrong.... :/

Are you saying Chrome took 5 seconds to close? I mean, considering that many tabs being open and that much RAM being used, that doesn't actually surprise me.

Yup, but at that point only 4ish GB of RAM was used. Normally it takes less than a second to close.

I use a different amount of RAM depending on how many MC tabs I need open... since I only have 8gb on my system i have it set so that if I need one open it uses 6gb each, 2 open uses 3gb each, 3 uses 2gb each and 4+ uses 1gb each. I use the remaining RAM for Discord and YouTube. I usually only have 4 tabs open at once: http://prntscr.com/j581rp
