That's one possibility. The radio signals are to see if there's another civilisation who can pick those up.
IMO it's probably quite likely we're the first civilisation to get this far, or we're about to hit a point that no other civilisation has passed yet and destroyed themselves through.
I agree, but it's also possible that we already have. We humans almost destroyed our own kind in the Cold War, except that JFK saved us all. However, we could still be destroyed by climate change and/or WWIII (if we don't prevent it, which hopefully we will).
Additionally, any life that does exist in certain habitable worlds (if it does), such as ice worlds' subsurface oceans, may never be able to evolve into complex life due to the only source of energy being volcanic vents. The same could also be true on habitable desert planets due to much lower global water supplies.
Honestly i'd die happy if we found life underneath the ice on Europa like we think there is, even if it's just microbial. That's proof enough for me that we're not alone.
