The map should expand has you explore the chunks. Sometimes the chunks take a bit to load on the map, though... you could be seeing yourself in unloaded (black) terrain?
Yeah, that always happens, I think. Partly, it's annoying, because you can't see where you are, but partly, it's also pretty cool, because you can see you're exploring terrain and really need to look around in the world instead of on the livemap to check it out.
