You should try the program called MCSkin3D from the Minecraft Forums, it's easy, fun, efficient, and is capable of making HD skins with its increase resolution feature, also has a decrease feature. It gives you 2D & 3D perspectives, or both if you want, and is by far the best skin tool I've seen.

(I like to make skins myself and I tend to want to helpout fellow artists.)

When you get a chance, would you mind giving this idea a shot. A 1960-70's detective/private eye but in grayscale. You know, the hat, the old fashioned suit, ect...

is using tools like that really better? cause i made a whole host of different textures and shading masks that i tend to use when i make skins, and i haven't seen a skin tool yet that would let me incorporate them.
