Waste Reset Warning with the upcoming 1.21.1 update

  1. Granted this update doesn't have really any new blocks, the ones that are new are craftable from old blocks. However there are the trial chambers which people absolutely will want to raid as soon as we update. There's a new weapon and wind charges are pretty fun. So not resetting the waste will absolutely mean people generating new chunks in the frontier to "use as wasteland." Which is a big part of what the wastelands are meant to prevent, as well as the frustration of players having to do that. I think double reset would be better that that.

I think I vote for 50% of SMPs double resetting, planned now.
(Well, really I'd vote for the chunk culling but that seems like it would be too much work)

Here's another idea, though. What about a staggered reset? Instead of resetting everything now and then half of them again in a little while, what if we reset only half of them now and then the other half with 1.21.4?
The end result is the same, all wastes being 1.21.x but only half of them having pale gardens. But I don't see that being much of a problem as as long as they're a couple of them for grabbing saplings and whatnot that's really all we need?

  2. but if we move to 1.21.4 only when we reset, this problem does not exist.

  3. As in just not update to 1.21.1? I didn't think of that as an option.
Given that the 1.21.1 update is "done" (enough for confidence in it at least) now and the reset date has already been set I don't feel that "eh, nevermind" is a very viable option.

For just me personally I would much rather have a double reset than wait another few months or whatever for 1.21.x. I have been waiting for crafters for so long 😂
And I don't feel like that's an unpopular opinion? Idk

  4. why did I write 1.21.4, and you ask about 1.21.1?

if we update to 1.21.1 this week, the reset will be a normal one, all SMPs, all wastes.

  5. Right. And then what do in a few months when we update to 1.21.4 which has new world generation? That's the crux of the whole discussion.

Perhaps I did not understand your previous message. What do you mean by "if we move to 1.21.4 only when we reset"?
  6. ok, re-reading I see there's been a few crisscrossed lines

    1. I think the 1.21.1 update should happen as planned
    2. I think the 1.21.4 (or whatever the number will be) update should wait for the next reset 3-4 months down the line

this is what I suggested here, and that is what I think farmerguyson was replying to in his latest post, to which you replied seemingly interpreting that as someone suggesting updating to 1.21.1 without doing the reset, to which I replied thinking you where saying that to update to 1.21.4 (because we were talking about that, not 1.21.1) without resetting would be a problem, and then here we are.

  7. My suggestion is to reset the wastelands as usual for 1.21.1, set the world border in the wastelands to a 6,000 meter radius until we update to 1.21.4 then set the world border back to the usual 8,000 m radius once we update to 1.21.4, or perhaps even permanently increase it to 10 or 12 km once we update to 1.21.4 and have the wastelands outposts be spaced 5 or 6 km apart (instead of the current 4 km spacing) after the first post-update reset. This would avoid being unfair to specific SMPs, prevent the need for a double reset, prevent people from mining the Frontier for resources added in 1.21.1 and avoid having to delete chunks. Permanently increasing the usual world border radius after 1.21.4 could also make up for the "lost" land area closer in generating dark forests but no pale gardens without having to shrink the radius yet again after the next waste reset. In any case, thanks chickeneer!

What is "chunk culling?" Sorry that I don't quite understand what you meant by that! I've never heard of that before.
  8. The implication would be to selectively delete chunks. I will note. There really isn't a way to reliably mark a chunk as notably altered or not. It's better just to start a new world, than to try and take a jigsaw to existing world files.

Chunks that don't load before the newer update, will already generate with the current version. We don't pregenerate the wastelands world. So no real reason to entertain "culling" parts of the wastelands.

  9. Just do 2 separate waste resets. Hurts no one, it's a very rare thing to do and no unfair advantages to be had. Would that not be the easiest to do?

  10. It'd undoubtedly be the easiest to just go with that. That's definitely a huge factor to consider. Nonetheless, I did still suggest changing the world border in the wastelands as a sort of compromise to avoid needing a second sooner-than-usual reset but also limit the technical effort.
  11. is there a new dragon egg available with waste resets?
  12. Nope. Only heads.

  13. Tonight's dev session should inform when the update will be ready. I think it is close to "good enough". But need some 'i' dotting and 't' crossings before declaring as such. Need to be 99.9% sure there won't be exploits, dupes, or data loss.

As for the wastelands. The plan will be to definitely reset them as planned. The 1.21.4 potential for another reset, we will push that decision off until I start on that update. It'll be best to get this reset done first.

  14. Whelp. My body decided that it wanted to involuntarily sleep last night instead of letting me do things.
So that means we are looking at a new minimum of Saturday. I still need to do my double checkings.
I have an obligation Saturday morning. So earliest could be Saturday afternoon :)
  15. Sleep is good! Thanks for keeping us informed!

  16. It was a classic. Fully clothed face plant onto the bed. Wake up 8.75 hours later. Phone almost dead, completely confused
  17. Wow - yeah. When your body pulls rank on you it is usually good to listen :)

  19. Alright today's the day.
    Assuming I don't find a major issue...

I'm busy IRL till like 1pm EMC time.
Then going to start documenting and writing an update post. Last minute sanity checking.

I'm really nervous about the update. So the update itself will be quite slow. Only after things are confirmed stable, will I do the waste reset
