Wheat Farm not working in town

  1. I have two wheat farms, next to each other. One works as expected, but one does not. The farmers just stand there, never actually harvesting the wheat. Sometimes Ill get one of them to farm one or two wheat, but never more. The big difference between the working and non-working one, is that the working one is enclosed.

I've done the same method with both of spawning the farmer, filling up his inventory with seeds, then releasing him from a dirt box into the farm.

Any ideas why the enclosed one would not work? I've picked up and re-placed the farmers, replanted the seeds, and re-tilled the farmland.

  2. I not sure what your using to surround your farm to keep the villagers on the farm but according to the wiki you shouldn't use fencing. It causes them to stall for some reason. After I read that I replaced my fencing with eye level half slabs to keep them in and had to re-do the villagers too and then it started working. This is one thing I have found.
  3. As per the picture above, I'm using glass on the non-working side, and dirt on the working side. I'll try removing all the glass and re-place.
  4. Sorry. I missed the pic.
  5. Replacing with dirt seemed to have no effect. The villager upon being released into the area picks up one piece of wheat (doesn't replant), and runs over to a corner and stands there.
  6. Do you have the same number of villagers in each?
  7. I've tried it with 6 in each and it didn't work, for these tests I've cut it down to 1 in each.
  8. Just wondering about "just standing there": how far away are you from the farm when you witness this behavior? Is it possible that what you're experiencing is simply the anti-lag system which slows down (and freezes) mobs when you're not close by?

  9. Here are a few things I've learned about villagers. Maybe one of these will help you.

The symptom "villager runs to a strange spot and stands" is usually because there is a village nearby. A village just needs a single qualified door and a villager, and will have a minimum radius of 32, so could be on the next plot over.

Another cause is if there is unplanted dirt nearby. The villager may be trying to path to the dirt that it is unable to reach. I haven't seen this one myself but have seen it mentioned on youtube.

Villagers can slow down due to activation ranges. If a player is not near to the villager (5 blocks?) the villager will activate less frequently which can slow farming rates. It might also look like the villager stops farming after one crop. You can see this pretty easily by inching closer towards your villagers until they start farming again at full speed.
  10. I'm right next to them when they are doing it.

There are definitely no doors within 32 blocks, but I can move the farm closer to the center of my plot (this is on utopia) and try again for grins.

There are dirt blocks at the level of the villagers nearby... it could be trying to path to it? I'll replace them with something else and see if it changes behavior before moving the farm inward.

Thanks guys for the advice, I've got things to try, and I'll report back :)
  11. Aikar changed it just for villagers, entity activation range doesn't affect them
  12. You could be right, or maybe I'm using the wrong term, or both. In any case would be an easy thing to check and rule out. When it was happening the villagers would drastically slow down on their farming as soon as I moved that 6th or 7th block away.

I'll recheck myself when I get a chance.
  13. My farms worked terribly before 1.11 when this was added as I was like 20-30 blocks away, now they work like a charm.

  14. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but to get my villagers, including farmers to work, I appears to have to be less than 18 blocks (x+z) from them. I got around this by building a perfect little village and blocking off each corner so they couldn't get there. Once any of mine got to that spot they would just stop until I moved closer. y does not appear to matter so I just did my farm stuff under ground.
