If you are talking about crafting the new 1.8 blocks don't do it. Quartz is way expensive. I am pretty sure each flake is worth more then a ingot of iron. Or in some cases a ingot of gold. Go out into the waste. If you start a mine it is almost not possible for you to miss dorite, andesite, and granite. They are not rare at all. I think they are easier to find then gravel. Going to the nether to mine quartz to combine with cobble to make those blocks is a waste of time. Just mine the cobble in a cave and you should find veins of that block no problem. Just a suggestion to save you time and money. I hope this helps.
