There is one problem with this. Even goverments make mistakes, and when it comes to these delicate subjects you often won't see these mishaps mentioned widely in the news. Its for a very good reason why The Register describes itself as "Biting the hand that feeds IT" because they'll publish anyway if they find out about this stuff (and if its legit, Register doesn't slander fortunately).

And make no mistake about this; the moment you're detained you'd better be able to proof your innocence, otherwise there's no telling how long it might take 'm.

Once again I need to stress out that I'm not propagating paranoia here with regards to shared information. But I do think a lot of people base their opinion on the thought that hardly anything goes wrong. And that's something I personally doubt a bit.

And here is where we come to a problem. Obviously, governments make mistakes and go overboard *cough* NSA *cough* but we also have to acknowledge that bad people are out there and agencies like this can help us. Too far in either direction is very bad news. All privacy means bad people can hide beyond these services and not get caught until it may be too late. On the other side of the spectrum, we have no privacy and a government that detains you for the smallest detail. What we need is somewhere in the middle. Some way for agencies to access the information with the cooperation of the service in question would be beneficial. Warrants would be needed and once the it is safe to do so, transparency will be important. When a government makes a mistake they should be held responsible for it and make the necessary changes for next time.

And you my friend have now worded the exact dilemma I was poking at. I obviously couldn't agree more here.
