Nether Portal Linking Problem, Near Spawn, Frontier

Discussion in 'Empire Help & Support' started by ChrysosHypno, Aug 13, 2014.

  1. Any experts or experienced in linking nether portals near Frontier Map spawn sites ?

I successfully linked up two portals, solid, near my settlement in the Frontier, however I need a second pair linked near the spawn site.

I manually built two portals in the Frontier overworld and the Frontier nether , that exactly matches each other's coordinates, using the 1/8 conversion. And I matched them exactly. Yet they don't teleport to one another :( . There are several other portals around in the Frontier overworld, and a BIG nether portal hub in the Frontier nether, near the spawn site. This could be interfering, however the wiki on this says if you match portals to exact coordinates, they should link regardless, and you shouldn't have a problem.

Yet they still don't link up. Both portals I built teleport to other portals in the overworld and nether, near the spawn :( .

I will say I think my nether portal I built has a Y coordinate that's higher than the Y coordinate in the overworld. Wiki did say this might affect things. But not sure if this is really the problem. Lots of others have portals high up in the Nether ceiling.

If anyone can help me , and explain it to me, how to fix this, I'll pay you good money (ruppees) for it. Just would like this to work :)

You can message me or contact me on smp9.

    Thanks
  2. The MC Wiki has lots of info on portals.

Basically, when other portals are close, it will link to one of those close portals instead of the one you want.

So, building the portal further out helps.

Here is some of the info...

    http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Nether_Portal

"Likelihood of 2 overworld portals linking to the same Nether portal - Overworld portals that are within 1024 distance of each other on both X and Z axis are almost always going to link to the same Nether realm portal on initial construction because 1024 translates to a distance of 128 in the Nether Realm, and the game checks for existing Portals within 128 "radius" around the destination (the 257x257x128 box)."

"Pairing portals - To setup pairs of Nether portals properly so that they reliably travel to each other, it is best to build both portals manually. Build at desired location X,Y,Z in the Normal World. Then travel to the Nether World. And then dig your way to X/8, Y, Z/8, and build a portal there."

and i dont need rupees, thanks,
  3. So your answer is basically "build somewhere else",

Kind of a no brainer, and not really a solution.
As it makes the travel time much longer.

What if there is a 1000 meter radius around the spawn that is full of portals ?
Would this mean I'd have to build my portal 1500 or 2000 meters from the spawn site ?
which again defeats the purpose of having portals.

I'm looking for someone who has the know-how and experience to link my two portals.
It should be possible. Especially using exact coordinates.

There should be a way to accomplish this.

  4. There are just so many nether portals around spawn, that it is going to be very difficult to keep some that stay linked (someone can just come along and create another one and break yours).
  5. You have to take your location *8 on x/z, same y, and build EXACTly there.

If you cant build exactly, then you have to do 3d distance comparisons.

So you may share the same X/Z, but different Y levels, if you are a mere 5 blocks different on X/Z to another portal, but 100 blocks off on Y.... Your portal can link to a different one still.

So basically, take portal in nether, *8 on x and z, that is the "Core" of the search bubble, then compare those coords to the coords of every portal around it, use 3d distance calculation, and the closet then wins.

If you need to go the other way, simply /8 on x/z.
