EMC "Entity" changes - Distance to activate

  1. If redstone stops working my farms stop working. I have my melon, pumpkin, and sugarcane set up to redstone timers.
  2. Not raging or bashing it (yet!), but a more detailed explanation saves a lot of unnecessary worry. ;)

Some of your updates are like those news reports:

    ASTEROID WILL HIT THE EARTH!
    in the year 2850

Mass panic and hysteria until the smallprint is read. :D

On a side note, I have also been in Austria ski-ing since Saturday. :D

  3. Ok that is good to hear.

  4. In a game as vast as minecraft - its hard to think of every single detail to post about :p Easier to answer when its asked.

Just think of it in a way that if you cant see it - thats what is likely to be affected.

I'm currently already seeing 54% reduction in entity ticking since last nights reboot (though this isnt prime time), so that is MAJOR in terms of performance gain.

I will be doing a stress test tonight... lets get over 100 online :) (I'm going to make some changes to allow us to change the limit on the fly
  5. Over 100?
I thought the max was 100, unless staff can go over that?
  6. I also just want to state -- EMC is a bleeding edge server. We will be testing stuff before the majority of servers ever have it or may never even have it.

Please dont outright deny an idea when I push it to our servers -- simply state ways to improve it and I'll try to work it in.

The exact implementation when I push it live is not static... It can always be improved, but we don't just drop entire ideas because its not perfect :)

We push to get it close to perfect so everyone's happy.
  7. Other servers have 300 players on their server lol. Our town design hurts us more than others as we have more entities loaded than others.

For example, 70 people puts us up to like 8k entities, 8k entities on other servers is around 200-300 players.

That's why I'm putting so much effort into optimizing entities.

  8. Doesn't this affect the growing of the animals, villagers and their wool? What about the veggie farms,do they count?
  9. I dont think they can. The server limit is 100. Imagine every server (including utopia) with 100 people... 1,000 people! O.O
  10. Read some his earlier posts about it.
Crops aren't affected as they are not entities

  11. we can set the limit to 1000 if we wanted and have a 10k limit...

    We chose the 60/100 numbers.
growing yes. The idea is to simply not wander too far from them.
  12. I was too lazy to read them, Thanks for answering!
  13. You have to see it from our point of view. Most people don't exactly take well to being lab rats. Its one thing to come with ideas and talk them over with the community. Its another thing to come and say "We changed this." It can not be helped if it causes an initial freak out.

  14. Wow, So I;d have to be 24 blocks close my crops in order for it to get the render and grow?

I don't like it. Unless you made it x20 times faster in order to compensate the time lost by being 25 blocks away in your chest room and not watching grass grow.
  15. Funny thing is, crops have been changed(growth behaviour)/broken/fixed for like 7 months now...

That's the thing. We have many tweaks in place that are so tiny no-one notices unless told.

I'm sure I could of pulled this update off w/o 99% of the people ever noticing it. But I decided to post about it so its just clear about the behavior for those who do notice.

Crops also require you to be close to them to have the best growth, been that way for 7 months now :)
  16. I mean if EVERY server was FULL! :D
  17. Again, crops are not restricted by the 24 number.
  18. Does this have anything to do with Exp not clumping together anymore?

  19. Also, I have some sheep fenced up underground my res and some of them seem to keep getting out.
Any idea why this might happen?
(Sorry, this will my only off topic post)
  20. I understand that, but EMC is not your typical server. We are growing and changes like this is required for us to continue.

This is a technical implementation detail -- something that you cant really get as good of feedback from the community.

It's better to make the change, then adjust as problems are found. The best feedback comes with live data.

Even if it was warned about ahead of time - I'm pretty sure we would of saw the same type of reaction simply because people don't understand it.

Least this way, people can SEE its not impacting them much at all, and gives less freak out.
Spigot bug, will have it fixed tonight.
