what new PC to buy?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous' started by Michael_Nolan, Nov 3, 2012.

  1. hi was looking for some help on a PC to buy (dont want a mac or laptop)

the person with the best computer suggestion i will give 1.5k to.

it needs to be a gaming computer and i dont want alienware or dell or anything like that, i would like it to be a custom computer

    what i would like
i was told an intel core i7 was pretty much mandatory for gaming computers?
i would like it to have good cooling
i want to be able to play games at a fairly high setting
i also want it to come with windows 7

finally the most important thing is the budget
i would like it to be $850, can be gone over but not by much

    my recommended site is probably
    http://www.ibuypower.com/
    thx for any help
  2. Intel i7 is going to be hard to get with only $850…They usually cost $1000 at the least.
  3. is an intel i7 needed for gaming i was just told it is but im not really sure myself?
  4. It depends. Are you alright with the graphics speed not being extremely fast? And the i5 is $150 cheaper, making it inside your price range…
  5. hmmm do u play wow by any chance? im not looking for ultra graphics just good or high, i run on low for everything i play so almost anything really would be an upgrade
  6. http://www.altech.com.au/nrg/systems/Detail/17 Try this!
    • Intel i5-2500K 3.3GHz (8MB Cache) Quad Core Processor
    • Overclocked up to 4.4GHz
    • Corsair Hydro H80 Liquid CPU Cooler
    • Intel Z68 Chipset – USB 3.0 & SATA3 6Gbps Ready
    • Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD4 Motherboard
    • 8GB Corsair DDR3-1600MHz Dominator Memory
    • Dual AMD Radeon HD 6870 OC 1GB GDDR5 in XFire Mode
  7. No, sorry. Hm. Maybe this one? http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/2012_Paladin_E
  8. I play games on a Core 2 Duo with decent performance... XD
  9. Custom build suggestions: (if you use a website, tigerdirect.com is a good second - i'd suggest newegg.com )

CPU - i went with (AMD Phenom II X4 965 (black edition) processor) I would NOT recomment i7 (if you did go intel, yes 7 is better than 3 and 5 - as they have memory issues) ... but i'd suggest AMD ... difference in amd and intel (example: when intel is upgrading or overloaded when overclocked or messed with ... it will completely crash, and you'll have to reformat everything ... amd - it will completely fry the cpu before it crashes - and it has higher resistance ... so i'd recommend the X4 (quad core ... as 6 and 8 - have more cores yes .... but they have lower Gigahertz and capacity)

Operating System - I got Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) on newegg for about 100 dollars ... now windows 8 is out ... idk whether to suggest that yet or not.

as for motherboard ... i got me an ASUS - just a pretty standard one with onboard sound system (you can have sound separate, just look at specs) - also look for the number of pci-e slots for your graphics card, external sound, and for other things like (A wireless pci-e adapter ... for like a (me i got a dual antenae 802.11n wirless lan card - for internet)...

computer case - i bought mine from cooler master, i got a steel case, cosmos edition - once again just look at specs, i'd suggest it not being plastic as it can break easier and heat up faster ... (make sure it has alot of fans, and easy ventilation

graphics card was for me - ATI Radeon HD 5700 1gb .... i'd suggest ATI's there are newer versions though - things on these you need to look for: (memory - mine was 1gb) ... slots on back for where your monitor will hook up ... now you might want to find a hdmi slot depending on your monitor ... also if the graphics card has a built in fan or not - helps with cooling

RAM - can be any amount - i'd suggest atleast 4gb (i got me corsair) ... but you also have to look at how many ddi slots they have (they can be any number, to fit into the pci-e or pci slots onto your motherboard) ... they can also be ddr3 ddr5 ... look for that too - make sure they're compatible

hdd - memory space - i went with a seagate 1TB ... if i was you i'd atleast make sure to get something with 7200rpm and lowest latency as possible ... an alternative choice is Western Digital

power supply - i got me a pretty standard XION power supply for around 100$ or so - just make sure it has the right plugs for all of your components you need - and enough power to power it all.

cd/dvd drives - these are almost necessary aswell (as you need to install discs) ... i'd recommend almost anything - try to just get a OEM version of one of them .... atleast have around 18x - 24x speeds

keybaord, mouse - standard - i would go with usb - wireless optical (perhaps logitech)

surround sound (optional) - i also went with logitech

(optional) - if you do get alot of fans, you can also get a fan controller - to set up different timings and speeds and regulation controls for your fans ... me i didn't do this - so they constantly run when my pc is on - but totally optional.

lastly - surge protector - make sure to get a good protection - if you're going to spend this much money ... me i got me an entire 12 outlet 5 thousand joule - but it's totally up to you - as long as you have enough plugs :)

if you go with brand name companies to pre-make a computer for you instead of custom building .... hp was good for me, but there builds are pretty cheap and the onboard power supply 'un-saudered' from the motherboard ... dell is pretty reliable - they are very durable and don't have many problems internally as long as you keep the clean and updated.

    hope - this helps

  12. I built my PC for less than your budget:
    i5 2500k
    AsRock P67 Extreme4
    24gb 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    Nvidia GT 520
128gb OCZ Vertex 4 (boot drive, boots windows 7 in about 10 seconds)
    1tb 7200RPM data drive.
    HAF X 922 case.

    its really fast,

please consider building your own like i did, its fun and it saves you money.
EDIT: The gfx card plays minecraft, tf2, portal 2, left for dead 2, etc with max settings, but i would recommend the Nvidia GTX 550 ti or the Nvidia GTX 480
  13. specs of comp.png

Like golfers specs - the processor is similar - his might be higher - but mines almost a year older ... processor's i'd go with would be AMD Phenom II X4 serires ... as the X4 (4 cores) give you higher gigahertz.

RAM - his might be higher ... but he has 12 more gigabytes than mine (but yet mine is still higher? how is this ...) well mine - you want to look for megahertz - i'd try to go closer to 3200 ... and atleast 4gb

graphics - mine is way higher ... and top of the line, yet not overly expensive ... try to look for ATI Radeon hd series (since there are newers - i'd look more closely to 6000-7000 series ... and atleast 1gb memory)

gaming graphics - very similar to normal graphics

and hdd - mine was also 1tb 7200 rpm ... but mine's over a year older (and my specs were updated almost 3 months ago) ... so just look for specs (seagate or western digital is best)
  14. Yes, you have better graphics than me because i ran out of money xD. And my primary disk is a 7.6 (really high) because it is an SSD, with roughly 500mb/s read and 450mb/s write speeds.
  15. Thanks - glad we ALL could help ... in light of everything happening to me in past few days - this cheered me up a bit - hope you enjoy your new computer :)
