  1. Lux, Question, what have you built? or doing at this time? any projects? anything? because it seems people who are just bored and doing nothing want this reset

I would say the only positive thing to this would be i will be able to coordinate a project with others on the new maps but saying this does not change my opinion in anyway

  2. Wow..
Started this thread for only like 4-5 hours ago and many of you have been taking part of this discussion:)
    That makes me happy:)

@ ryukk123 I stole that sig image from someone else, lots of people have it :)
  4. Regarding the pruning if you are referring to the resetting of derelict lots, it is not an automatic process.
There is a list on the server, and as players go inactive for ten days, or get premabanned, they get added to this list.
Justin or Jeremy then claim lots as needed, beginning with the longest inactivity first.
When there are still a good deal of lots available (maybe 50+ for example), the derelicts will go a little longer before being reset, which is why there are times when some players are seen as inactive for several weeks before their lot is reset.

As mentioned by others here, as soon as Justin knows what his options are, there will be a community discussion, and eventually there will br a decision reached regarding whether a reset is desired or not. Justin will not know what his available options are until after mojang release 1.2.0, and after bukkit have released their stable platform for new update, it still may be a month away yet.
I don't see it being possible to introduce the new biomes into the wilderness without a complete reset. With the 1.1.0 update it was merely necessary to alter the existing biomes files to allow the new chunks to use the new interaction and code. With the 1.2.0 update there is a complete new biome added, and this may cause some fatal errors in its interaction with the existing world structure.
Personally I think the wild should be reset periodically to bring the new features of minecraft to the players of EMC servers. It is a competitive business in minecraft servers, and I am sure Justin likes to maintain the reputation and good standing of EMC for being up to date and latest version.
Every player on empire knows it isn't safe to build in the wild, it is drilled into us from the tutorial that the only safe place is in your own 60x60 lot in town. Of course I respect a players decision to choose to live and build in the wild, but in reality every player has a safe place to build provided for them, if they choose to build there or not.
That being said though, I think it is fine to skip a complete wilderness reset every second update or so if it doesn't offer any real significant improvement or alteration, but for such an important update as this I think a reset is worth it.

Any views expressed her are my own and don't necessarily represent the position of EMC staff. :)
  5. Hey everyone, just wanted to comment on a little bit of this discussion. First of all the reason I didn't kick off a community discussion about any sort of reset regarding the 1.2 update is because I don't have all the facts yet. I doubt that a wilderness will be technically necessary but it is always a possibility. The process for updates is Mojang has to release the official vanilla server then Bukkit has to take that and make it into CraftBukkit server , then we have to take that and adapt it to the Empire platform. Mojang tells us very little (or nothing) about the multiplayer impacts of any update. Bukkit then has the fun job of poking through it and patching it up so it is actually multiplayer worthy. It is not until after that when I get it that I can begin to assess what impact it will have on the EMC platform.

Absolutely not. I am not the dictator of EMC. I am the organizer of EMC. What we are today is was a product of the community. As a community we will discuss and decide this issue as more of the details are known.

Towny is for sure a really cool idea. Unfortunately it does have some flaws. One big flaw for us is that it is not designed for large servers, and it is sort of the policy of Towny not to worry about large servers. The performance of it is horrible and it creates thousands and thousands of files on larger servers. I talk often with other server owners and the few that still run Towny have constant problems (most are considering moving to a different system). This doesn't mean we couldn't come up with something that is in the same spirit as Towny :)

The majortiy of this destruction takes place within the new periodic reset area. Although these areas are not resetting yet (I am still finishing up the coding) I feel this will fix 90% of the problem. If you don't know what I am talking about see: http://empireminecraft.com/guide/worlds#protected

Of course, everyone plays MC different and as such everyone lives in the EMC community differently. Our goal is not to force everyone to play the way we want, it is to provide a fun environment to play how you see fit. Don't worry I fully understand people live in the wild and it is not just a huge strip mine for resources :)
  6. Here is my idea on the entire thing. I saw Justin's thread on a possible SMP5 within the next week. I say we do not reset the wilderness because i have a really awesome Skeleton XP grinder on SMP2. But here's my idea. We keep the wildernesses the same, and we wait until 1.2 is out to release SMP5. Then, if people want Jungle Trees and Jungle Sapplings and all that good stuff, they can go to the SMP5 wilderness and get them. Problem solved.

  7. Yes, but some people have huge secret bases that they spent a lot of time modeling so that could be harsh...
  8. Oh, by the way, does locking chests cost Rupees?
  9. ISMOOCH, LuxuryMushroom and Seberling like this.
  10. Also, if the wilderness is actually reset, will chests disappear too?
  11. Yes, otherwise they might end up in the middle of an ocean.
  12. Of course, but everyone will have ample time and notification to retrieve their belongings if the wilderness is reset, and I imagine the lock will be 100% refunded during this time, but don't quote me on that ;)

  14. Yes, but what if you have tens of hundreds of chests?
  15. then you might have to hire some people with camels to help you haul it all out.

  16. I completely agree!
  17. The main issue I see in this is we would be effectively be running two different versions of the game. If this solution was stretched over a couple of updates and server increases you could have:
    Smp1 - smp 4/utopia - 1.0/1.1v
    Smp5 - 1.2v
    Smp6 - 1.3v
    Smp7 - 1.4v

It starts to get a little silly at this point. It also means that if smp5 was the only server with updated game files, 6 servers worth of players would be attempting to access the only updated wilderness if they wanted to see the new features.
I just don't really see this being a viable option in the future, or even in this case.

As Justin has said though, he has no idea what avenues are available to him from a technical point of view, this discussion is a few weeks too early at least, and will no doubt be repeated when the time comes. :)
  18. Yeah, we're pretty much stuck waiting on Mojang it seems.
  19. I guess you are right we might as well update all the servers on a regular basis because then no one would be on the other servers for they are not updated. Most people do want the new updates on the server they have spent so much time on, I mean I do as well, but I'm just paranoid of losing some of my hard-earned items that are stored in chest out in the wilderness. I think the best idea is to give the server some extra time to prepare, heck the idea that they are going to reset the wilderness is just a theory at this point anyway, but should they do so, give me and my fellow paranoid miners a heads-up. I'm currently in the process of transporting all my goods to my residence anyway, but for fear of stolen items and for want of untouched land, I ventured very far out and it takes me about 1 hour per chest, haha. But anyway I see your point and I agree.
  20. Im okay with everything... just waiting that my friend gets hes own office, then i might take my own opinions =D
