It has been confirmed that mod support will be added to Minecraft 1.3! The mods will be called plugins by Mojang. With this, you can simply place mods into a folder, and they will work! Hopefully mods that need modloader will work with it!
Probably not right away, but I'd be surprised if most active, popular mods aren't quickly changed to conform to Mojang's official plugin system.
Well, I saw a page on the wiki that said it was coming in 1.3. Also, a link on the site takes you to the word of Notch, and what from he said, its coming VERY soon.
