Since you cant kill mobs in the protected zone, makes some mobs harder to kill. Like if you are fighting a Marlix and they go into the protected zone, you have to somehow lure it out. I was thinking that hostile mobs get maybe teleported out of the protected zone.
You could make it so that there's an invisible wall by the borders do the protected areas that hostile mobs can't walk though.
Not necessarily an invisible wall that only certain beings can pass through, but a boundary for their pathfinders.
