If I were you, I would get a program caled MalwareBytes. It is a free Malware protection program for your computer, and can save you a Lot of time and frustration.
Malwarebytes doesn't actively protect your computer. You still have to click the run button for it to do anything. Avast is a good free one that will do the active protection stuff. Also, an adblock will help remove all of those fake yet realistic download buttons.
Avast! Security is the way to go it immediately lets you know if your on a bad website and it will tell you as you search if websites are good or bad. I have it myself :)
Malwarebytes is useful in the situation that something gets past Avast and you need to run a scan on a possibly infected computer. I remember when doing my research that Malwarebytes was one of the best at cleaning deeply infected computers. Avast is like the first wall of defense stopping most stuff while Malwarebytes is the super death army inside waiting to be called to attack.
