The reason English is hard to learn is not due to an inconsistency in writing. You can look at *any* system of conveyance and see the same contextual nonsense. It even works with math.
English is complicated due to a lot of words that sound the same but have radically different meanings, and the inverse. This is why there is both "English" class and "Conversational English" class. Knowing the language is one thing, but being able to understand and speak it is another thing entirely.
To consider yourself fluent in a language, you have to both be able to speak and understand it. People who learn English via text generally have a hard time with speaking and listening.. while the opposite is true for learning English via cultural osmosis or other spoken forms.
It is hard to learn, but most people misunderstand the difficulty as being related to inconsistencies.
