HP wrote about the Cthulu mythos which has had a huge effect on popular culture. His most famous works include The Dunwich Horror, The Call of Cthulu and The Whisperer in the Darkness. My recent short story Eldritch Nights takes inspiration from these stories and he is one of my top 3 authors.
Most people don't know who Nikola Tesla, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Seacole or a lot of other modern-ish historical figures who contributed to science or literature or anything. They will most definitely know their works though.
So yes, he really is that forgettable, just like pretty much everyone else.
I wish I could forgot Thomas Edison. He doesn't deserve the title of a scientist, he was a mean hearted thief who could never have an idea of his own. While Nikola Tesla, the creator of AC electricity is forgotten and died in poverty.
At least Nikola got his face printed on the modern day Serbian currency (the Dinar). I get a lot of pictures of that money with his face on from my best friend and she goes crazy when she sees his name mentioned. He's the equivalent of a national hero to them, so at least its not as bad as most others.
