I'm just gonna sum this up in one word: Distrust. No one has trust anymore, and those who do have it end up losing it quickly once their "true colors" are revealed. Heck, no one's perfect, but no one is willing to accept one another for their flaws, or allow the other person to change for the better.
Couple that with the fact that these people have most likely had bad experiences with people before in the past, and enough of them would make one reluctant to meet other people or even trust them, like I'm sure many people where I live have dealt with, sadly. I don't blame them, they've gone through a lot, but because of the people that have wronged them they've basically closed themselves off.
