I have found the best way to be social and make friends here is to first look at town chat for cool people, then randomly make a pm and start talking. Then boom friends.

To make rupees quick, I'd go and collect double chests of different blocks and auction them on the forums. Try to gather the most 'wanted/demanding' materials like netherbrick, brick, etc. you get the point. I hope this helps. =)

Rupees: vote everyday! A quick and easy way to get r. Then mine useful items like wood leather, books and ores and sell them to shops or high value items and auction them. Like agennt said. Social: talk to random people in town and on the forums xD i used to walk around town to peoples reses and ask them what they were doing and if they needed any help

There are also a lot of fun and social threads on the forums like the random screenshot thread, show yourself thread, writers corner, contests and so on
