So, when I joined, SMP4 was a fairly quiet server. But now it has boomed immensely due to recent events. Today I was talking on the Supporter Channel, and almost all messages were quickly drowned in town chat, none of which I cared about. I wanted to continue my conversation in that channel, so I didn't want to turn chat off. I was talking with multiple people, so I didn't want to use private message. And there were several questions for supporters and experienced players in general, so it would be annoying for those in a Group Chat to constantly switch between group chat and supporter chat. I tried to use ignore, only to discover that you could ignore players, not whole channels. And there were a LOT of players using town channel, and more coming and going every second. So, I would greatly enjoy an option to ignore channels as well as players. I think this would be extremely useful in events, supporter conversations, and even just journeys in the wild, all of this depending on who you are and what you're doing. Just my opinion on this, and I do hope this gets implemented. If you can already do this somehow, please let me know. Thank you!
Once upon a time, that existed. Nobody (Read: A lot of people, but not enough) used it, so it was removed. Kind of like "restore previous versions" with Windows 8. Just stand in Wild spawn if you don't want to listen to town chat. Quick messages between channels can be achieved with the /qm [channel] command. (/qm t for town chat, for example. Works like @@[message])
YES YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES! I will be trading and someone comes to a res by be and does ./c r and it like "Olaf? Hello, Olaf?". That or there is annoying conversation in supporter chat.
I posted an idea similar to this (almost exactly one year ago, coincidentally) and it seemed that the reason for dropping it was because of lag issues. I of course agree with this suggestion, but the server would have to filter every chat message for every person depending on their setting which could slow things down. Here's my thread if you want to see the discussion: http://empireminecraft.com/threads/suggestion-chat-stream-options.19562/
Then I won't get a pm if someone needs to ask me something about my shop or farms or a sale I'm doing
I voted yes. There are times when I would love to turn off one of the chat channels but I tolerate it because I want to receive messages from the others. As Kadboy points out, there is no way to filter everything without overhead which is probably why it was removed. BUT! There must be some filtering going on already since only Supporters receive Supporter chat. At the very least Supporters should be able to turn off Supporter chat. Then if we want to escape from the other noise like Town or Residence chat we can always turn chat off completely or spend more time mining. I have also considered suggesting that we be able to set our status to "Away" or "Do Not Disturb" like on other games I have played. Not really the same thing though. I've been afraid to suggest it since it might hurt feelings. There have been a few times when I was grinding xp and would log on and off the server, each time having to stop and acknowledge greetings and questions. Sometimes I play with a goal in mind and other times I'm just standing on a Chest socializing. We have an AFK status for chat already. Being able to set my chat status to "Away" or even "AFK" would allow me to play anonymously when I choose.
