  1. I havent really seen a need to post here, but I did want to point something out in this post...

Many people mention time. Its not even just time. Everyone that is one EMC obviously has enough free time. You can be a good staff member and do nothing but monitor chat all day. And thats a good thing. But, most of our staff members, find new and different ways to add depth to our community. I know that I find myself talking to many players out side of the game. Working on side projects. Spending literal HOURS talking back and forth with other staff about future ideas (mostly arguing). I, personally, hate the attention. Its great to have a voice you feel will be heard. However, its not about the 'worship' that someone said earlier. If this job was about sitting around watching people grovel, it would be way more fun :p. But there are serious social dilemmas that you have to deal with.

As a player, you get to just see a situation happen, report it, then ignore it if you wish. As a staff member, you find the report, dig for issue, if there are two sides, you get both, you must find the proof of any wrong doing, and then decide what the appropriate punishment, if any, that needs to be issued. And every situation is different. Its not about age, but the maturity to see a situation and know how to handle yourself.

And then on top of all that, you need to be able to walk from that and still have fun playing the game with others. I spend a little bit more time 'behind the scenes' with other projects just simply because that part of moderating is tiring, and I take a break occasionally. But now I have all these side projects for EMC going and you want to see them completed, but you have to find time. My normal playing hours seem shorter, I have to stay up late at night when everyone else in the house is asleep.

There are a million reasons for a person NOT to want to be moderator, yet so many people want to be one. Thats great, we love it when people want to be a part of our staff, we really do. However, players who are out there helping everyday with everyone else, doing good things. They are more valuable in that state to us, than as staff most of the time. Because like I pointed out, your whole game play schedule/style kind of changes when you transition. You have to go into it, and up to it, knowing those things. Its better to want the position because you know it is hard and you can still make it work, than to want it because you know just how easy it is going to be.
  2. Bump.
I also want to become a mod still but I am happy helping out the community as my regular self and without the title. When i get mod I will ride my pet unicorn into Mt. Bacon next to my vault of money. As you can tell from the previous sentence I doubt i will ever get mod but I am okay with that :). For players who also want mod penguinDJ said you can still do as much help in the community as a normal player and these are words to live by. Power the the players :).

  3. its alot of work, i pretty much spend every minute im home doing something having to do with the emc community even if its just derpin around with other players. been an interesting transition period but im starting to get the hang of it and get comfortable performing my duties
  4. I think some people just think it would be cool to be a moderator and not consider how much work you have to put into it. They might just want to impress people and become popular on the server, like when everyone says hey to a mod/admin when they come on, but once again, they don't realize, it's not fun and games (funny since this is minecraft and it's fun and it's a game) and you have to put a lot of work into being a mod.

  6. I would also like to point out, that while majority of the community is super awesome and likes to remain drama free, we have small groups here and there that like to hate on the moderators simply for the fact of hating them. It happens with all of them as well. Unfortunately, it comes down to jealousy for something that really shouldn't be an issue of being jealous about, but it happens.

We've had people do things from publicly and unfairly berating staff, threatening to, or actually cancelling supporter memberships based on mod choices, or even just quitting EMC all together (No, I'm not kidding, these people exist, haha). So, this again just goes to show that the hard work these people do as staff are not only time consuming, but can be mentally draining at times as well, and we hope that the silly people mentioned in this post (aside from the ones that quit), actually see that even though they've done these horrible things to someone simply because they have a position to help, they still have the composure to remain helpful and neutral in situations involving those same people.

On that note, if you're the rest of the people mentioned above (the awesome ones), make sure you thank or show your appreciation to the staff when you see them. The undeserved negative comments can bring down the best of them...but one comment from someone who shows appreciation for what they do can make up mentally for 100 of the negative ones. :)

  8. Sorry if I'm wrong but it seems like this is exactly what the thread is about in the first place...

  9. I'd just like to add a bit more to this after reading some old threads:
People shouldn't become moderator just to be a moderator. The promotion shouldn't be the priority of anybody, but how to help people and get the community flowing with energy, that's who the title deserves to go to.

I am now starting to realize, that helping people... Is not about one thing in game or on the forums. It's about almost anything. And, I am also disappointed I didn't know that sooner...

  10. 'but liek i em so awsum an i kan haz fun an suffs an maek ppl laffs mods dun do dat all teh tiem'

Kidding ^ The only reason I ever wanted to be mod was to have my name green and be worshipped, seriously.

  11. I, like iSmooch, felt no real need to comment on this until reading his and ICC's posts. Everything they said is 100% spot on.

This kind of behavior reiterates exactly the reasons why they may not have been a good addition to the staff. Eagerness to be a part of the staff generally isn't a great sign. In addition, having a preference between players, or letting feelings interfere to such a strong degree probably doesn't help either.

As brickstrike mentioned, the goal is to help. That's all.
  12. bump. Very glad at how much feedback I've gotten on this. :)
  13. I used to really want to be a mod :p I helped people to achieve that goal, then I realised that being a moderator isn't everything, I didn't need it anyway, and I was a long shot off being one. But helping people and telling them off for breaking the rules kind of stuck, and tbh, last time I done it, it was kinda fun :p

Doing it as a 'job' would kill it for me >.>
  14. Very beautifully written! This pretty much captures everything you should take into consideration if you want to apply for a moderator, and there are actually a few very valuable life lessons in this! Again, incredible. :)

  15. Im loving the amount of polite, and well thought out responses in this thread. Its nice to be a part of a community with people who actually put thought into a thread before posting random nonsense.

I once applied to be a mod after a fair bit of consideration. I did so simply so i could help mediate dissagreements and resolve issues of grief, i actually never put thought into the other aspects of becoming a moderator and as such im thankful i never progressed further than an application.

I admit im an emc junkie, logging into the forums from my phone probably every other hour or so. Even when i took a break from playing emc and went to try other mod packs, i was still reading the forums on a regular basis.
Honestly, im not sure if i could deal with having a constant thread of conversations about different issues and complaints.
Because of this reason alone, i am simply in awe of how well our mods and admins do there jobs and how fast they are able to respond to issues and complaints that may pop up.

We have the BEST mod/admin team in the minecraft world that i have ever encountered, and ive been on ALOT of servers.

GOOD WORK TO THE STAFF!!!! May you contiue to keep this the best server online today...
  16. I applied three times and then realised I don't want to be a mod
    Just gold supporter... Someday
  17. Also, don't forget that even as staff - we may not agree on certain things 100%. Generally, we do. But occasionally, as with anything else, people have different opinions. In my time here, pre-staff and staff time alike, I have seen some extremely opinionated people. Passion is one thing; Stubbornness is another. Each and every member of our staff has the ability to adapt :D I believe it is our strongest advantage over any other minecraft server. (Do any others exist?)

    :D

  18. Nearly everyone wants to be part of the Mod Squad. But the Mod Squad is like the Fire Squad... you may be an impressive part of the community and you may feel like everyone's hero, but there are major drawbacks... long hours monitoring chat/many hours spent in the firehouse waiting for an emergency... answering lots of questions/putting out lots of fires... there are lots of similarities! Mods are like the courageous, stoic firemen of EMC. So if you don't have what it takes to be a virtual fireman, don't try to become a mod. May all you mod-firemen keep up the good work and enjoy your time as staff.
