Top tip and how I avoid all the carnage outside the spawns is to use the Nether. Find a good spot, bang down a portal, jump through and wherever you come out on the other side in the Wild is where your adventures begin. I've a fairly successful route in place that takes me away from all the mess outside the spawn.
I was in my Wild mining camp, and a damn creeper dropped in just as I was smelting some ore... I hear sssSSSSSSSSssss Turn around just in time to watch our farm go bye-bye...
