The Wild South Museum of History!

  1. Ok, so the title is a bit ambitious but so is our goal here. A long time ago, the PWU had a location in Wild South in SMP8. It was comprised of various ice themed builds, from an ice farm, to snow farms, to squids and slime farms. Between updates and Mojang bugs and its far location from the other more useful utilities at Wild North, Wild South was annexed from the PWU and now, myself and AverageWalrus run it.

That said, Walrus isn't very active anymore, and because the builds have fallen out of favor, nobody really has a reason to visit these builds other than to gawk at them, and even that is difficult when there isn't a whole lot to look at other than some general history. But a lot of work was still put into these builds and I honestly think it's sad that they lay rather forgotten in the frozen tundra of SMP8's Wild South.

So I am asking if anyone would like to help me give this area of land a more important role in becoming a wild history museum of sorts, both for the PWU and potentially its members as well as EMC itself. This means we're going to have a lot of builds here for the sake of just being pretty, lots of thematic builds, and lots of pixel art. This is different from most of PWU's builds because we aren't super concerned with the spawning of mobs other than to keep players safe, so most designs will be ok as long as they are lit up well enough!

What we're going to be adding/changing in Wild South-
    • Buildmoding. Lots of what is at Wild South is not auto-protected and was not rebuilt in buildmode, and if we're going to be making this a visual build, having the builds protected is incredibly important. If you don't want to design and you aren't interested in building, this is an easy job. Just break the block, replace in buildmode. Tedious, but not exactly mentally-exhausting task.
    • Fixing builds. While we do not necessarily care if the builds function as intended, we want to fix any obvious problems - i.e., pieces missing from the floors or other visual errors. I believe the ice farm is permanently out of order, but it can at least be made to look nice.
    • Pathing. The builds will be scattered around the complex and it's rather easy to get lost at Wild South. I will need some players to lay out paths between the builds as well as signs pointing to nearby builds.
    • History! While we have the EMC wiki page that documents historical events and a lot of what is on the PWU thread's front page can be used to surmise events regarding the PWU's past, nothing is better than hearing such from the horse's mouth. So, if you're a PWU member, please, put down what you worked on here and what you remember about the build(s) you were involved in! This is possibly the easiest task on this list. Just ramble at me below, or in PMs if you'd prefer. :p
    • Providers/Donators. We're going to be using a lot of mats and I mean a lot, especially in the way of wood due to signs, fencing, and chests.
Now onto the less general stuff, the nitty-gritty details...

    • Bullet rail. The railway to the Wild South complex is not a bullet rail and is pretty long at that. It needs to be transformed into one. Demonstration for such a railway is here.
    • Stable. We want somewhere players can keep their horses and other critters while they're visiting, in the event they do not want to store them again. It may be nice to consider having a field of sorts for cats and dogs, too.
    • Auto-smelter and food farms. Auto smelter isn't hard, I have a design on my alt's third res that would work fine, it would just need to be bmode'd off so nobody can enter its innards. The machine just uses cart mechanics to ship contents back and forth, though we'll want to mega-size it.
    • PWU Hall. An idea for a build that I currently have is a "town hall" type building that will have stylized rooms that contain information regarding each public build, and the main hall will feature information regarding PWU members, including recognition, what they worked on, and potentially player heads if they're willing. This will be a very interior-decorating-focused build, though the outside will need to be pretty too. Perhaps we'll focus on making it look like an ice palace? After all, Wild South complex is in the tundra!
    • EMC Avenue. Wrapping around the entire complex will be an "avenue" or large pathway of sorts that contains general EMC history. It may have notable members, former and current staff, the dates and what certain updates changed, and other useful information for EMC. The style and way the information is given is what will be the creative part. This is going to be a massive pathway and will go in chronological order, and if going around wild s once isn't enough, then it will sort of spiral outward. I have no definites on this yet, just that it will be a very creative part of the project and will require a lot of attention to detail!
    • General maintenance. While ideally we'll protect everything, griefings are still going to happen if we publicize Wild South enough, especially because it is so old. If you don't want to work to aggressively shape the place into what I envision it to be, then you can be a more passive helper in general maintenance. All this means you do is you run around, tell us what's wrong, and maybe fix if you feel confident in doing so! :p
    • A name! Wild South complex sounds cool, but this place is going to need a name, and Wild South Museum of History is too much of a mouthful. Post your suggestions! :V
Shoot me a PM, or post below if you're interested.
  2. Oh I get to ramble do I? :D lol this sounds very fun! Thanks Slvr!
A number of things come to mind.
We discovered that combining a slime farm with a swamp farm is a bad idea. For awhile there, enraged mobs kept spawning in the swamp farm, and we had no idea why. Then I got told "you're not supposed to farm enraged mobs!", and I was like "uhh, they just showed up...". Forget who I had that gem of a convo with, but they were a bit of a ninny.
The ice farm kept breaking, mostly due to creepers or people flooding it by whacking the ice without silk touch. I had to beg Deceptious to come out and redo all the redstone to solve that.
Chum, MrC, Corrupted and I were mining for what felt like forever. This was back before we did sensible things like brought out beacons and had fully enchanted picks. We also built the swamp farm first, and then added the slime area. That was a mistake of epic proportions LOL.
Ulti mined out the railway for it. Someone did nearly that whole rail with the stairs and all, but I forget who it was. Might have been you Slvr? Or Deceptious?
At one point, someone had the idea we could use snow or iron golems to attack the mobs in the swamp farm. There should be a golem graveyard out there because the skellies took exception to that plan and killed them frequently.

I also managed to break a chunk of the wild at Squid Doom. Twice. "Tesselating blocks" error. It's a Mojang thing, and something of a black hole.
The first time went something like this.
"Kat (kaptrix), can you get a hold of staff for me? Something is wrong and I am trapped and disconnecting repeatedly."
smp8 was trying to figure out why the heck I kept getting connected/disconnected, and a few folks came out to try and help.
--Enter RainbowChin-- Chin rescued me by TP'ing me out of the affected area. Meanwhile, some well meaning souls had stepped into the affected chunks. Now they were trapped and disconnecting. Chin rescued them also.
Now town chat wanted to know what the heck was going on, why Chin was there, etc. Town emptied and a bunch of folks came out... And promptly also got sucked into the black hole I'd accidentally created.
At this point Chin threatened to "flip tables" if anyone else stepped into the black hole. :D (It's still funny, at least for me lmao.)
Chin thought he'd fixed it all, I thought all was well, and we thought we understood how it had happened, and what NOT to do so it wouldn't happen again.
Yeah well, Chin and I were very wrong. Because... I broke it again the next day in an entirely different way.
At that point, I left Squid Doom unfinished. You should probably turn it into a hazmat site Slvr. Just be very careful with whatever you do there. I think if it breaks a 3rd time, Chin will get you LOL.

  3. Cool ideas to repurpose the Southern Wild! Count me in!
  4. As I've stated in dm I'm in...
Woof a khix ramble I didn't see well read that then edit :p
    Ah ok i've read now.

Yeah I remember that I had wanted to revamp and khix immediately shot it down with "Chin will have my head!"
I... still want to find a way to make a squid farm on 8, without tessellation :p oh wait aquatics may break that... hm. we'll see.

And yes another edit.. PWU halls.. that looks.. interesting, to say the least :) I can't wait to see the player bit.
Ok I'm too sleepy to fully grasp, studying for tests doesn't cope well with me XD
