These infuriating portals!

  1. I've never in my life seen or had this many problems with portals. I'm making a portal in the nether (off my rail) to make a base. I go to the overworld and portal is there all is fine. I try to make another portal in the overworld to a different location in the nether and no matter what I do or how far I go it always links to the original nether portal. This makes no sense at all and should not be happening. I looked on the wiki and it says that portals should be 128 blocks apart. Which it is. And still won't work. The main nether portal is near the top of the nether. I've even gone down to bedrock at a different location and that one as well links to the same overworld one as the main one.

In the overworld, I've made a portal 250 blocks away, 450, 650, 850 & 1000 blocks away. Every one leads to the same ---- portal!!!

    Why is this happening?!?

    From the wiki:
Did EMC change how these work?

  2. What are the x, y, and z coordinates of the portals you are trying to link? I used to just try and match up x and z but had a lot of problems until someone told me that y was important also.

For example if you have an overworld portal at 8000,64,8000, you would want your matching Nether portal at 1000,64,1000. I had thought the y coordinate was irrelevant and kept cross linking. Since then I've had as many as three portals quite close to one another(50ish blocks?) in the Nether leading to different places in the overworld.
  3. I can't give my cords lol but the height for me was never an issue. We had our base portal at 64 and I moved it to 6 and there was no issue. This thing just makes no sense. I mean 1000 blocks away in overworld and still links the same portal??
  4. I know, sometimes this happens to me too. I don't know why.
  5. I don't really care where your top secret base is and even if I did I'm not going on ten different servers looking for it, so lol backatcha.

Maybe you would be more comfortable giving out altered coordinates that are close enough to help you make sense of the situation. Without some numbers I can't do more than be sympathetic to your plight and tell you that it used to happen to me also.
  6. I didn't mean offence. I'm super exhausted. I will get you the numbers in the AM. Thanks for you comments though :)

  7. It can be a bit tricky - I've found that the easies solution is to create both sides manually:
    - choose / calculate coordinates for all portals you need, take care of separation. 128 blocks in the nether correspond to 1024 blocks in the overworld. So yes, portals that are 1000 blocks apart in the overworld can link to the same nether portal. (This allows for (limited) fast travel if the portals coords are carefully chosen.)
    - if possible use two accounts, one on the nether side, one in the overworld.
    - destroy all portals in the vicinity, both sides
    - build pairs of portals on both sides at the chosen / calculated coordinates
    Good luck :)

  8. Likelihood of 2 overworld portals linking to the same Nether portal - Overworld portals that are within 1024 distance of each other on both X and Z axis are almost always going to link to the same Nether realm portal on initial construction because 1024 translates to a distance of 128 in the Nether Realm, and the game checks for existing Portals within 128 "radius" around the destination (the 257×257×128 box).

So, your portals have to be 128 blocks apart in the nether, or 1024 blocks in the overworld.

Unless you didn't build it, cause then someone is just going to be pissed..hehe
  9. That's how I do it. If you use only one account you will run between portals a lot ;). But this way I got portals that are much closer than 1024 blocks and connect to different points in the nether. The ones in the nether have to be apart 128 blocks though.
