Smite Enchant Not Working?

I have diamond sword with no enchants and it takes 5 strokes to kill spiders, zombies and skeletons. I have another diamond sword with smite 5 and it still takes 5 strokes to kill the same mobs. What's up?

My difficulty settings are at 6.

Actually, I don't think any of the enchants are working. A bow with no enchants takes 5 shots to kill the above mobs. A bow with power 3, takes 5 shots as well.

Even though it's at six... Maybe it has something that lowers damage

well, for one, smite doesn't work on spiders

Yeah I Know. The "spiders" was an oops. The point of this is that enchants don't seem to be working.

On difficulty 6 a diamond sword with no enchants is doing the same damage as a diamond sword with smite 5. It's the same with the bows. A bow with no enchants is doing the same damage as a bow with power 3. Both the bows, and swords, take 5 strokes or shots to kill a zombie regardless of the enchantment.

I hate to be a pain but I'm wondering if I need to bother enchanting my weapons anymore. Is this "working as intended" or will this be fixed in the future?
