  5. Three months too late. It's worth mentioning that the Doge wasn't actually the ruler of Venice. He was more like the Queen of England is now. The doge was appointed by the council of 12, who were appointed by the council of 40, who were appointed by the council of 12.

    Or something along those lines.
    Pronounced "döj" or "dö-je" No plural.
