The Uphill Battle - Minor Rule Violations

  1. I don't know how it is for you, Hasorko and Panda, but in most cases, this kind of harassment behaviour is easily subdued and reported. Do it via a forum PM so that you can discuss in more detail, it's more efficient if you would like to know what's happening. In past situations I've always been kept in the loop and have been made aware of what I did good, bad, what the punishment was, ect. Of course, this depends on who the staff members is, but if it's necessary they will log in and ask you to explain exactly what happened, ect. just to make it easier for them.

Recently it hasn't been happened.. at all. So must just be a server-attitude thing.

Hasorko, I think you need to be specific - what exactly is the problem that you'd like to address?

  4. I'd say, always think about the intention behind a rule or set of rules.
In this example - "no auctions in town chat" - why not? Because it is spamming the town chat and annoying the people not participating in the auction. The intention is to prevent that.
If there are 5 people who know each other in the town (as it happens daily on smp6 :)), then the town chat becomes their local chat and it can happen that there is no need to go to a res to make a small auction.

You're describing a problem of spamming the town chat (with auction) and actually annoying you (like 20 times a day).
I'd suggest: "hey <name>, please do the auction in res chat (/ch r), you're spamming the town chat, it's annoying"
(So you don't mention rules, reporting, kicking, banning, world wars and death in the first line ;))
If it continues, you have the option to repeat your request: zero times, 1 time, 2 times, 3 times, 7 times or 7x77 times :)
If it still continues, then /report <name> spamming town chat with auction

If you see it as work, you're kind of trying to moderate the town chat, caring not only about your needs, but also about others.
Still, I'd suggest the same wording as if you would be the only annoyed person in town.

Talking about specific cases, each specific report, there is no real need to know. And, if it happens 20 times a day, you will soon see if there is a change or not.

What would be good is to have a general feedback about what is happening and how specific situations and problems are resolved. Perhaps that would be like EMC newspaper.
"Yesterday in the evening, there was severe spamming of town chat on smp3 again. Unfortunately there were no mods online. blah, blah ... rant about spammers and mods..." ;)
No, no, not like that :)
But perhaps kind of monthly summary written by a calm journalist that would interview mods and admins and report findings to the community. :)

If you have reported an offense several times, and there is no change, then it is both ok to ask mods for clarification and bring the topic up in the community discussion, as you are doing it now. But it is not a flaw of the reporting system.

    Have fun :)
  5. When you said that, I went up and clicked Alex's profile.. =P

  6. I think what you guys say is right and also helpful, to see how others handle those kind of situation (and have been in those)

Thought the reporting and banning works, I have to read those insults (missing the right word but you ge tthe point) as Panda kinda described it and also have to accept that I can't really do lots to prevent reading them, as it is not 1 bad person, but a ever changing groupe.

But I think M4nic_M1ner has a good point. The passively warning thing kinda made me think, that though I still think I'm perfectly fine to say that further rule violating will result in a report, I'm kinda getting myself in the position to look like the one who is punishing them, though I have as a member no right for it.

As about it doesnt matter whether or not mods are online. I do remember the times there were so many mods at smp3, since it was due to them participating in the district. But I must say it was lots different then it is now.

But anyways I got a solution, which I will try. :p
  7. Right I get your point now

To prevent it WITHOUT getting mods involved, I say warn them. If they try and hit you back with an insult, /report them - don't abuse the system, but I don't think you're the kind that would :p - then /ignore them.

If these don't work, PM me and I have an idea for you. :)

  8. I disagree about learning about punishments. I think you are doing a great job in keeping EMC as spam-free as possible. I am sure someone would tell you if they thought your /reports were frivolous or excessive.

The mods handle reports as promptly as they can. You should get an auto-reply thanking you for submitting your report, once you submit it. After that it should be up to the mods to mete out such justice and mercy as they are wont.
There are plenty of people still on EMC who had to learn the rules the hard way, but once they did learn, became active, supportive members of the EMC community.
