I tested it with an Xray texture pack (For testing purposes on my own server... ), I assure you I could not find it!! I forgot the location of where I put the portal haha... I ended up having to go search my log files to find the location (This is on my test server) I havent came up with a finalized probability yet -- and its going to likely change once it goes live anyways, but we could be looking at 1 portal out of 1000 chunks... That is A LOT of ground to cover (1600 x 1600) Then even when you are within 3 chunks, the xray simply does not help. There's nothing more disappointing than to be mining and come upon xrayer tunnels. Unlit, twisty, turny passages full of redstone, iron, and coal, with an empty chamber at the end. It's like cracking open a nut and finding a maggot's eaten there already.
I've seen that photo thread but I can't tell what block it is because of the texture pack. Is it obsidian or bedrock?
Aikar, in the portal screen shot that has been posted, the portal itself is sitting in the middle of a lava pool. Is this indicative of the conditions required for them to spawn, or was that just to look pretty?
Sounds great guys, looking forward too this. Im gonna be spending about 10k on diamond armor alone so I might just get you all 2 sets of iron armor with diamond tools. Do these only appear in areas where the chunk hasnt loaded? How many people have joined so far? I cant be bothered counting... Im still so tired. And if were going too be digging a 1600x1600 area in total I sudgest we go down with 20x20 spiral staircases? Aikar any clue on when the update is comming out? We want too be first in! I do hope we find one
Smp1's cool! I'll help with providing everyone with diamond armour. I don't think it's nessecery to dig a massive area out to possibly find a portal. I think our best bet is to explore caves, ravines and mineshafts as that is where it sounds like they spawn. We should also split up into maybe pairs to explore the caves and then when pair finds one they let everyone else know where it is. That way we're not strugling to organize 5+ people to search 1 cave.
Good Idea, I like that... I thought they could just spawn anywhere and everywhere. But if we split off some of these cave systems last forever with mixed paths, so if we get lost, wait no we can use the live map too locate ourselves. I guess it's just a waiting game now, I suggest we all watch videos on how to kill the ender dragon to give us some tips.
