Don't do that again. You can't. This is why we now have Nether Spleef... It alleviates the entire issue and if everything goes well, we may have one in the wild soon, too... You will just have to be patient.
You can't sorry natfan, there maybe a way in the future but currently there is not. There is a wonderful spleef course built southeast of the nether spawn on smp1. It Is a lethal arena set over lava, when you fall you die, so be sure to empty inventory and spend your xp points. The arena was built by Dark_Liz and the game is sometimes run by staff, which means diamond pickaxe as prize for last man standing of every round.
