Congratulations, at least you know what a botnet is. Do you really think that someone who is smart enough to be able to create a botnet would waste their talent on a DDoS? Nope, botnets are rented. Whoever caused the DDoS yesterday just paid for limited access to a botnet, so if that is what you consider a hacker, then literally anyone with money can be a hacker.
That article is extremely narrow in its reasoning. seemingly deliberately. Ignoring obvious definitions for ideals of what those definitions should be but not what they actually are. As far as the current "ddos attacks" I have a hard time believing that a Microsoft owned corporation would be susceptable to such attacks. I don't think that's actually what is going on but a convenient excuse. :-)
I think the several hour outage a few days ago was a DDOS, but this recent stuff is just Mojang's incompetence. Microsoft just bought them for Hololense and a small Win10 version, I doubt that they care enough to upgrade the servers they use lol.
The article was less than I wanted, but the basics were good enough without all the detail.:P
You wouldn't need to upgrade the servers to insure yourself against a ddos attack. There are several ways around it, from what I have been told, that should be things already put in place on a game that rakes in millions on top of millions of dollars. Incompetence, I believe that even if it was the fault of a ddos attack this still applies.
