Because I don't like games that have a difficulty level so high they're practically impossible to beat and become boring after less than an hour. I'm fine with things like Hotline Miami (not Hotline Miami 2, though...), because its genuinely fun :P
Once you learn how it's played, the game changes from super hard to hard. Games today are easy compared to how they were. The Souls games bring it back and separates between the children to the adults...
As somebody who has grown up around old games and frequently plays them: that's not really all too true. Yeah, sure, they were harder than games are today (most of the current audience in the gaming industry are filthy casuals :P) - but they were never as hard as stuff like Dark Souls, they were fun, and they didn't have DLC :P
One particular franchise that comes to mind in terms of dumbing down is Fallout. Fallout and Fallout 2 were pretty hard games, had loads of substance to them and the setting was a mix of 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Bethesda bought rights in 2004, and released Fallout 3 in 2008. It was a pretty easy game, lacked a lot of substance the originals had, and was purely 50s in setting.
That's where mods come in play, it makes the game more fun as well as adding more content - There should be a mod to like Fallout 1,2 and tactic for F:NV.
