That's true. My first desktop had a Athlon 64 @2.3(?) ghz. had a Geforce 9500GT (1gb ddr2 vram) and 2gb of ddr2. Got good fps in most modern games. Skyrim, mc, tf2, etc.
Was that a build? Mine was an Alienware from 2008 and it came with Athlon 64 X2, 1.0 GB DDR2 RAM, and a GeForce 8600 GTS but we did a 2-way SLI and put in another. In 2011 the audio came out like crap though and we got the GTX 460 but then in 2012 the PSU crapped out and fried the mobo so we just bought everyone in the house a laptop :P
I have a ton of desktops manufactured between 1997 and 2004. In total I have a Pentium I, 3x Pentium III, and 3x Pentium 4. Most are NEC with a few HPs :P
Your first build sounds quite similar to my 2002 HP Paviloion 7965, Pentium 4 at 1.4 512 DDR, and 160 GB :P
Ooh... suckage. Vishera (FX) CPUs are quite nice, I don't play many games that eat up more than two CPU cores so my 6300 can handle it quite well, plus the overclock to 4.5 GHz. They're cheap because AM4 CPUs are around the corner and Intel skylake outperforms basically all of them easily.
The thing about Vishera CPUs is that take any 8 core CPU, you'll note it has 8 actual cores but basically all the other stuff in there is shared between 2 cores, making it basically a glorified quad core. Even cinebench says so.
