The Hurricane Harvey Pet Rescue Team!

  1. Hello everyone!

As you all know there recently has been a devastating hurricane that struck Texas leaving many family's with no home and stranded pets. A few days ago it was said that trucks of cats and dogs would be coming to New Jersey(Where I live). As of today I became a part of "The Hurricane Harvey Pet Rescue Team" in my local area(I was a volunteer).
Today at 9:00AM I woke up and went to a pet shop around my area where all this stuff was going to happen. There were TONS of donations of cat/dog toys, treats, food, children's toys, clothes, etc! As we worked more and more people came and brought donations and helped out, they were so sweet <3 For the first couple hours it was freezing out and we worked through the cold sorting all the donations and labeling boxes and bags. I, myself, was labeling all the garbage bags full of clothes, food, etc and helping sort everything. We had the left side for all animal related items and the right for all human related items.
We continued doing that for a while and lots of newspaper people came and interviewed people, including my mother and I who were interviewed 3 times by different people. We were interviewed as volunteers being here helping out and as us being Hurricane Irene survivors (I lost my whole home from that). We also had our picture taken a few times for the paper :D Even NBC Channel 4 news came and did some stuff! (We might even be on the news tonight xD). This was actually a much bigger project than I expected it to be but in all I'm just glad people were willing to take time out of their day and help like me!
Towards the last remaining hours more trucks of dogs came (cats were delivered yesterday) and we walked them around, calmed them down, played with them, documented them and more. Most of the dogs were either very playful or very scared of their new surroundings. I walked 3 different dogs, a golden fluffy puppy with black dots on her muzzle, a small mutt that looked similar to a miniature pin. and another one of those. I actually am not fond of dogs and would rather not deal with them but there was this one dog that I think was a Miniature pin. and we bonded very well. She was small, really shy and scared and had kennel cough. Every time she coughed I would massage her neck and she would calm down and snuggle next to me. My mom said that with time and effort she could actually become a therapy dog because that dog did calm me down in this situation and made me comfortable! When I started to leave at 2:30PM she even tried following me to the car lol :p
The people running this event today offered for me to come back other times and help out with stuff around there even if it has nothing to do with Hurricane Harvey and do some community service (#School)!
I really appreciate all the people that helped out today, including myself because all these donations will go to people in need and the dogs there who got adopted or are going to be fostered, I'm happy for them! As a hurricane survivor myself I learned to give back to the community for what they did for us when I lost my home and my normal life then! If there are any places by you helping out because of the hurricane go help out :D Do some good deeds for the people who are in need of it! This was a very good experience for myself and everyone that attended. I hope everyone who got hit by this hurricane is safe and will find all the donations from around the country helpful~
Here are some terrible bad quality photos I took while I was there:

  5. I couldn't read the wall of text but I am in Austin, TX. Obviously not affected directly by the hurricane but I spent some time volunteering at the Central Texas Food Bank this week who were sending down "hygiene packs" to shelters. I plan on going down to help with some of the cleanup efforts as well.

If anyone on EMC hears about things going on to help out, please share here and I can re-post to see if others can join.
