how to grief-proof your frontier creations!

  1. okay I have never been griefed (grieved?) on this server before, but I've been griefed on other servers before and it's not fun, Even when it's your friends who are taking your hard-earned purpur blocks. So heres my guide to grief-proofing your builds. Step 1, basic traps.) set up some dispensers, try to get a lot of tipped arrows for the dispensers .Step 2, Security.) place some Lava moat if possible around your builds. try to make a piston Bridge with hidden levers to cross the lava moat. try to build a wall around your build, if possible make the wall out of obsidian. make a maze around your build if you're that kind of person. if you do build a maze , instead of placing a door, even an iron door, make a piston door using the same kind of block you use to make the rest of the maze.Step 3 secret entrances and exits.) (optional) okay if you're the secretive type of person what you might be asking is can I make a secret entrance ,the answer is yes ,and I can tell you exactly how to do it. substep one. using piston doors. Now I already told you how to make piston doors but you can also make piston doors going up ,you may already know this though but for those that don't this may be exactly what you're looking for. using ladders and some piston you can exit from your build and enter the outside of your build
with little effort it may take a little more time than simply walking across but this is good for security, Now what you're going to do is it down a little and then use ladders to make a way back up, then using pistons, make the door of the exit / entrance into / out of your build, now there is going to be a dent in the floor to hide the distance, the fix is simple just make a floor pattern that hides this dent in plain sight. and then dick that case that's going to make the entrance / exit into your build. now you're going to dig up, and then you're going to use some ladders to build a way up, and then you're going to use a piston and a dirt block to make the door of your exit / entrance into your build. now there's going to be a dent outside now but you shouldn't have to worry about this as there are usually some dents in there unless you're in an extremely flat biome, in which case you may want to dig around and make some kind of a pattern to make it look glitchy. now you may want to hide a button somewhere to activate one of these pistons for when you're getting in and when you're getting out, on each side of course, make sure these buttons are well hidden or these do nothing! Step 4. Get Creative.) there are many other methods to grief-proof your build that I may not have mentioned here. if you know any other ways to grief proof please comments on this thread. if I have made a mistake please tell me what my mistake was and what you should actually do in the comments. I hope I have helped you well enough that you will no longer be griefed. happy building!

  2. On this server we have a thing called /buildmode and when you use it. Any blocks placed while in /buildmode will be protected. Meaning unbreakable to anyone who you don't want to be able to break them. Also uncommon blocks are also auto protected.. EX.. Gold blocks , Redstone blocks slabs, stairs..
This link goes to our wiki page about the Anti Grief System that has the command /buildmode among the other commands associated with the system. https://empireminecraft.com/wiki/anti-grief/

Also setting traps that could potentially kill a player. Is considered intentional pvp and there for a ban-able offence. EX... a drop trap into lava. Your arrow idea i would think be fine.

  3. I couldn't read all of your post since it was one big wall of text, but we have /buildmode. Protects almost everything.

  4. okay sorry idk that out would count as pvp.

  5. Good rule of thumb is. If it's designed to kill a player who tries to enter your outpost. It's probably a no,no.
However the only thing a player can do to kill another player in the /waste or /wild is douse them in lava, or drown them in water.
Arrows and what not are fine ways to decorate a place but ultimately those things can't hurt a player outside of the PVP arena on /smp6.

  8. In the past, I've heard that if you put warning signs, it's not considered intentional PVP. For example, put a lava trap, and then put WARNING: DO NOT ENTER OR YOU DIE outside it. If a griefer comes in and dies... well, you did warn them.
  9. /buildmode on

Solves all your issues. Also the fact of being in a remote area.
  10. I used to use a grinder with a door that Zombies would come to and stand around moaning all the time. It was really annoying so we decided to put Cactus in a pit with a lever controlled trap door over it on the outside of the door.

One day I forgot to close the trap and accidentally PVP'd TheBoulder. He was visiting for some Moderator thing and fell in afterward as he was exploring.

  11. Another important detail to remember: apart from /buildmode every so called 'uncommon block' will be automatically protected once placed, see the previously mentioned anti-grief wiki page for a complete list of them. Not only in the Frontier, but in the Wastelands as well.

So if you want to protect a building then your best way is to create walls with uncommon blocks, for example using one of the polished stone types (diorite, andesite or granite). After that only your friends (see /fr list) will be able to break these blocks.

  12. Just to clarify - it is intentional PvP if that were to occur and would risk a permanent ban from the server.

Even if a player does grief your build, it isn't justification for them to be killed.

  13. I have no intention to build traps for my fellow adventurers, but find this an extreme measure coming from a server where staff often hold what they call - Death Events, where the goal is to see how many times they can kill off the would be adventurer who attends the events. Would this not be an intentional PVP that was also forewarned?

I personally don't go to those things, because it is not my kind of fun here, but for many it is fun... somehow.

The other thing is, if said trap...or obstacle were no more difficult than what one would normally find in the wild, how could this be taken as PVP? Still seems like PVE to me. I have fallen into lava too many times to count in the nether. :(

And then there is this thing where people go around trading heads? Heh...

I have heard of several such places in the wild where one could go drop off a spire / cliff or something to their death so they could collect a head. Would this not also constitute a notified existence of a potential PVP scenario? If such is viewed as PVP.

Even if that is the stance the Empire takes, I am still confident they investigate stuff thoroughly and determine on a case by case basis if something were truly intentional or if it were sheer ignorance that led to a design that inadvertently befell a fellow adventurer. I personally like the idea of a lava moat, but wouldn't want to be held liable for the poor soul that fell off the bridge and died, even if it was due to a skeleton's arrow.

  14. I'm pretty sure the whole thing also involves around intent. Does the builder have ill intents and is he only trying to cause as much damage as possible (and therefor effectively try to ruin other players fun) or is this simply a build as is where the other players basically have no place to be there in the first place?

But about events vs. buildings... The difference is of course that staff always warns players about the risks of participating in an event. Even mob arena and such: careful, you'll probably lose your stuff. That is something you most likely won't see in the wild.

Which I think is probably another concern: say you did build a trap for players and even put up tons of warnings to tell them to stay out. I could raise some arguments about the possible intent. Like: was it really to keep players out (if you want to keep players out you already can use /buildmode and lock things) or was it to try and "rob" them of their stuff? Set up hoppers, kill player and start collecting?

And what if players missed those warning signs?

Of course I do agree with you... If you build something and specifically warn people not to go in and they do anyway.. Yeah, it seems a bit weird to blame that on the builder instead of the "burglar".

So here's my take on all this...

If you really want to then I'm sure you can bend some rules. Meaning: if followed to the letter then you might be able to argue that you didn't do anything wrong. Yet when you look at the involved intent you'll see something completely different. A bit comparable to my previous comment.

But yeah, I agree that those "head farms" also have the potential to kill players. But the major difference is that even if players find themselves getting killed unexpectedly they won't risk losing any of their stuff. A few weeks back Aya tried one of those, and then I figured "let's enhance it with redstone" (was a fun project!). So even if you didn't read any signs and dropped dead you'd still be able to grab all your stuff from the nearby chest.

With "building traps" that remains to be seen.

I'm certain. Krysyy herself has stated numerous of times that "Each case is different" and I'm also fully convinced that this also applies to these issues.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much.

Once again: intent. If I walk up to such a building in the wild I'll know right away what I could be getting myself into and it'll be up to me to decide if it's worth the risk or not. It won't be anything hidden, it won't be anything "You should have read the signs!" "What signs?" but it would be plain out obvious that there's a risk involved.

More so: it would be something that even appears in a natural vanilla world. Aya & me recently established an outpost and in an area nearby (near a forest) there are several lava pools. We haven't had time to work on them but if you'd just run along there you'd have a very realistic chance to tumble right in, with all the ill effects attached.

I'm not staff but I'd be very surprised if they'd take action against something like that. Of course... I do make some assumptions here. So the moat is easily visible from a safe distance, the lava won't be hidden by any trapdoors or such, the bridge is wide enough (2 - 3 blocks), etc.

As always just my 2 cents.

  15. A couple things to consider is to make sure you are in safe range from other outposts and pre-claimed areas so you are not griefing when you start. This is getting a bit tougher but is still fairly easy to find 10k blocks from a spawn. Just a warning...

Also, while I personally have not even played minecraft long enough to have ever griefed anyone (I hope) I find it funny that in a game where you can place blocks pretty much anywhere that we still think something like a maze, wall, lava pit or the like would help. Again, not trying to help anyone grief but just build up 5 blocks with dirt then use shift so you don't fall and build over the maze, wall, door, lava, etc... I can see a few well hidden traps that could be good for this but only once and now you have a very mad griefer! ;)

Anyway, I thought many posts above describing buildmode and pvp and such were very well done. Hope you find a good place to create your outpost. If you are looking for a fairly close location with rail access to a portal we have few plots still open. If any interest PM me here or in game.
  16. I think their statement comes from a previously said statement from a while back, and was just communicated incorrectly at some point down the line.

Mob defenses are ok, so long as a player who stumbles across your base does not get caught up in the traps unknowingly. The sign idea is people would warn others so that they wouldn't be killed, and so that staff would know that they tried to prevent this kind of PvP. I am not sure if this is still current though.

  17. Hey we learn new stuff everyday ! Thanks for your passion to not have greifers though, but yea as others have mentioned, /buildmode is a life saver

Your post was pretty cool though you put some effort into it i can tell :D
  18. You are fairly new. I went through what you are when I started. I came from a faction server and it was hard to put my head around that there is very little griefing on this server. You can literally build something in the wild with no protection and the chance someone will grief it is next to nothing. You can have a chest with stuff in it and the chance someone will steal it is extremely small too. It takes a while to get used to the idea that this group of people on this server just aren't about doing that. It's very refreshing and you will get used to it the more you play here.
