  1. Well to get back on topic for little known bands.

    Apartment 26 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrTEP-kqcXk
One of my favorites since I was a kid, spent weeks saving to go to one of their concerts, met the band after the show.
    Drone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlM7ihKB7jA
First found them from the also little known video game Soldiers of Anarchy.
    Joe Satriani - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SINl5JY7LhI
My father introduced me to Satriani, best guitar player i've ever heard.
    Micah Brown - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JafT0U8WT4M
More well known on the west coast of the US, heard of him while I was in cali.
    Nonpoint - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOO4VZeH4-g
I think I started listening to them in the early 2000's, not one of my favorites, but still good.
    Pitchshifter - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGcdcVblZ-8
One of three bands I listened to constantly in the early 90's, the other two being Biohazard and Apartment 26.
    R.A. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMvppW6kfIE
Been listening to them for a long time, they are starting to get noticed more
    TR-i - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2Ae6DnvS1s&list=PL-Jpf3NAeJZg76SbjofBvfcDFw3XBF7kQ
Another band my father introduced to me, lead singer is Todd Rundgren who's first band was self named and more well known.

Hope you enjoy at least one of these.
  2. I still think the best guitar player is Jimmy Hendrix... =P
  3. I love pretty much every Sigur Rós song. That band can do no wrong. I guess the bands that I like that not too many recognize are phantogram, goldroom, lykke li, shura, warpaint, tep no, fka twigs, vitalic, and hurts.
  4. Feels Better Than Love? :D
Favourite songs are such a toughie, there's so many that I like! :D Alright, I'll have a go from the ones you mentioned that I like...
Breaking Benjamin: Until The End, Blow Me Away, I Will Not Bow
Green Day: I love all of them, no point trying to find a favourite if they all are  *favourite band*
Nirvana: Lithium, Come As You Are, Heart-Shaped Box, Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Panic! At The Disco: Lying is the most fun a girl can have, Nine in the Afternoon
  5. Man, I just discovered this new band named the Beetols, they're Scotland or something, and they're really good!

  7. When I came across this thread I immediately needed to think back at my teenage years... During either a vacation or a day out in Germany I managed to pick up an audio cassette (yes, there were no CD's back then) called "Deep cut" from the group "Melon". I had no idea who they were, but it was nicely prized, the cover looked good and names of the songs such as "Quiet village", "Hard core Hawaiian" and "Funkasia" appealed to me so I bought it. And liked it a lot. Got hooked pretty quickly. Also because the repertoire was really diverse. From "Hawaiian music / pop" to some rap and regular songs.

Anyway, as these things usually go; eventually you forget about it (also because the audio on the tape became a little less pleasant) and at this time all I know is that my audio cassettes are in a shipping box somewhere in the basement storage.

I've asked quite a few friends and former colleagues about Melon but nothing came up. So I came across this thread and did an another search just now, many years after the facts. What do you know, it seems you really are never too old to learn ;)

I found them on Wikipedia. Oh the irony, it's not a German band which I've thought all my life so far, but actually a Japanese band working under an American label. Alas, here you can see how great Wikipedia sometimes is; the Melon article refers to a band called 'The Plastics' who split in 1982. Sounds about right where my age is concerned. But the Wikipedia page links to an article of a band which has been active from 2008 to present. Doesn't quite match up.

And discogs.com actually knows more about Deep Cut, as can be seen here. And if you want to know about Melon: check this out.

Oh, and the reason I say irony is because Japan has had quite a big influence on my life. For reasons way beyond my comprehension. This is another classic example. Quite a funny one actually, I might actually try to dig up that tape this weekend because its making me quite curious.

Anyway, more digging led me to these youtube 'video's', this brings back some memories....

    Hardcore Hawaiian:

I have to say some things still sound good to me. Immediately grabbed both and turned them to mp3 just now ;) Good times :)

  8. Yes, I still listen to Mika a fair bit actually :p Love Today, Grace Kelly, Lollipop, Take it Easy, so on! Don't listen to him as much as I did but it's still great to hear songs by him :)
  9. Bumpity bump.
  10. I guess now my age is showing but I got another one. What I like and admire about this artist is that its quite likely that you heard some of his work on the television or even in movies while the name of the artist may not ring any (tubular) bells.

Talking about Mike Oldfield. The first part of his electronic piece "Tubular Bells" is heavily used and well known.

But I'd like to share 2 of his other works....

From a time where most artists didn't feel the need to undress but instead focused their attention on actual singing :)

  15. I don't know about their movies but I'm sure it was used in the television series. Both Tubular Bells (part 1) from Mike Oldfield as well as Spiral by Vangelis. It's funny because those two pieces of music also sparked my interest in synthesizers and sound creation / design.
