[Project] Residence Erasure Defence (RED)

Discussion in 'Community Discussion' started by triphora, Jan 3, 2021.

  1. The RED project will be a project dedicated to compiling a list of significant residences on EMC, and then preventing derelict from claiming back said significant residences if not already protected in some way.

    How will this be done?

Players would vote for the owners of these residences on a regular basis, and then upon verification, would receive some sort of reward for doing so.

How is this different from GRIP?

GRIP would help with griefed players and with players whose residences were already claimed back due to derelict. This project would prevent players from going derelict in the first place.

    What counts as "significant"?

Basically, any build where it is obvious a lot of effort, time, and dedication was put into said build. This is an ambiguous definition, up to interpretation and all, but at the end of the day it would come down to my personal interpretation.

What builds are on this list?

Builds on the list of significant builds will be found on my website once compiled.

How do builds get on the list?

If I come across one, I'll add it, or someone can PM me about a build to be added at https://pm.emc.gs/wafflecoffee.

    Why are you doing this?

Well, there are many very nice builds on EMC that are deleted due to sheer unluckiness. Take for example, the Mumble HQ on SMP8. Truman forceclaimed the residence (and many others) that brought me and I'm sure lots of other people a considerable amount of memories, and it was overall just a nice build. Now it's been replaced with a big white concrete slab and a casino, and that build is lost to history, unfortunately. This will help prevent cases like that.

    How do I help?

The largest step will be compiling the list in the first place. I would greatly appreciate any messages with builds to be added to the list.
This list, while it will primarily focus on builds that aren't derelict protected, will also include builds that are protected.

Any other comments, questions, and concerns can be sent in a reply below or to my inbox at https://pm.emc.gs/wafflecoffee. :)

  2. Looks epic... Spelled Defense wrong though... (unless Defence is some sort of other thing idk about)

  3. Great idea. I've had my own stuff lost due to derelict sadly. Nowhere near to be counted as history but a sad loss.

Hopefully we're able to protect great builds as well as public service residences this way.

Both are correct actually. Just one is american and the other is british spelling.

  4. I have always thought it would be nice to have a Retro Server where saved states at some specific times or intervals could be archived for future generations to look back at what the towns used to be like. I do like your endeavor Waffle and have on occasion done this very thing for others to preserve what I feel is worthwhile for the community. Maybe there could be some sort of group derelict voucher that the community could chip in to buy for such builds. Some kind of 9 person purchase where all 9 pieces could be put together to make one voucher to be redeemed by SS or something. As for the 9 pieces though it would need to be 9 different people and not someone such as ourselves that have multiple chars. If this were the case, then the 9 pieces might could go for say $10 a piece and for 90 dollars with a community discount since it is for the community, we could get protection for those iconic builds we as a community hope to preserve. I don't know, it might be far fetched, but these were just some thoughts that came to mind. I do appreciate your level of concern for the Community and the Empire in which it resides. Keep sparking those good ideas :)

  5. I think I'm probably not the only one already voting on behalf of other players to protect residences (eg community farms) but a unified effort is a good idea! How are you going to assess what makes it on the list or not?

I have often thought it would be nice to have a community-based path to derelict protection but if the community funds a protection voucher then there would need to be some kind of commitment by the residence owner to maintain that residence as it was, gets a little tricky.

(Defence is how we spell it in New Zealand too).
  6. Did you check with staff whether this is allowed? :) I recall there being some issue related to this.
  7. As long as the players being voted for don't already vote for themselves, I don't see any problem in it. :) It's just voting for players to keep them from going derelict, but with a more unified front to ensure these residences are preserved.

  8. I would be interested to hear if staff are OK with it. If it's for the good of the community surely they're on board with it?

  9. To be fair, there really isn't a point in keeping lots from going. There has been many masterpieces that have been deleted over time and new ones replace them. Older empires crumble away and newer ones come up. I think that's the beauty of the derelict system. If every lot that was deemed good looking were to stay. Would sort of stifle the creativity of newer builders since they see 'peak' architecture all around them. That and good plot numbers going unused for players who don't play anymore or left for other reasons. It becomes a absolute chore as well to remember to vote. I used to do that. If you 'really' wanna keep lots from going derelict. Buy Permanent Derelict Vouchers and get them redeemed for those residences. I spent 20m before I left doing just that. No having to remember to vote now :>

  10. Usually, they're just replaced with blank plots, not with new builds...

Not everyone's rich enough to do that :p

I am still waiting for staff input before I proceed further with this project.

  11. Or the classic oak plank shack, couple of trees, small farm, couple of cows. :lmao:

  12. i mean idk man, you prolly wont have to worry since the server population is declining
  13. Just build in the frontier and you can't go derelict :p

Good idea though. The only builds I can think of are the super obvious ones that are probably already on your list though.
